Woods Hired at Colorado College
from press release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sean Woods, who has served as the head men's lacrosse coach at Mars Hill College in North Carolina for the last five years, has been named the head men's lacrosse coach at Colorado College, according to Director of Athletics Ken Ralph. Woods will replace Guy Van Arsdale, who recently accepted the head men's lacrosse coaching position at Jacksonville University.
Woods had an overall record of 51-24 in his five years at Mars Hill. During that time his teams won three Deep South Conference championships (2009, 2010 and 2011), and he was named conference Coach of the Year for three years (2007, 2009 and 2010).
Woods' 2011 team finished the year with an 11-4 record and was ranked ninth in the country in the LaxPower Division II polls. His Lions were ranked third nationally among NCAA Division II schools in scoring offense and fourth in margin of victory.
Woods' 2010 team finished with a 10-4 record. The Lions were rated ninth nationally and were ranked in the nation's Top 10 in both offense and defense that year.
In the five years prior to Woods' arrival, Mars Hill's win-loss record was a combined 19-47.
"I have followed CC athletics very closely over the years and am very excited and thankful to be the Tigers' new head men's lacrosse coach," Woods said. "Under the direction and leadership of Ken Ralph and Greg Capell, I look forward to working with the players, alumni and colleagues to keep building on the success that Coach Van Arsdale has attained at Colorado College."
Woods started his coaching career at Brown University, where he was an offensive assistant and a goalie coach during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. He helped lead the Bears to a second-place Ivy League finish in 2002.
In 2004 Woods joined the staff at Division III power Washington College in Chestertown, Md., where he was the offensive coordinator as well as the recruiting coordinator. During his tenure at Washington his teams had a 41-13 record and made appearances in the NCAA Division III Final Four in 2004 and the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals in 2006.
"I'm thrilled that we were able to attract Sean Woods to Colorado College," Ralph said. "With his proven track record of success, passion for the game and boundless energy, he is more than capable of building on our program's success. We have aspirations of being a consistent presence on the national scene, and we are confident that Coach Woods will guide us to sustained competitive excellence."
Woods graduated from Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in anthropology. He was a four-year letterwinner and won Hartwick's Coaches Award his senior year. He is a native of Newport, R.I.
