US Lacrosse Announces Champion Challenge Slate
from press release
BALTIMORE – The fifth annual
Champion® Challenge will take place Jan. 30 – 31, 2010 at
Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista,
Fla. The event, organized by US Lacrosse, will feature the U.S.
men’s and women’s national lacrosse team programs, Duke
University’s men’s and women’s lacrosse teams,
the United States Military Academy’s men’s lacrosse
team, the University of Notre Dame’s women’s lacrosse
team and the University of Florida women’s lacrosse team.
The U.S. men’s national team will faceoff against Duke and
the United States Military Academy, in Team USA’s first time
playing together since the 23-man U.S. team roster was announced on
Nov. 2. This is the second time Team USA and Duke will have faced
each other in the Champion Challenge. Duke played the U.S. team in
2008’s event.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to begin our
preparations for the July World Championships in Manchester,
England,” said Jody Martin, US Lacrosse’s men’s
division director. “We look forward to competing against
formidable opponents Duke and Army. US Lacrosse extends its sincere
gratitude to Coaches Danowski and Alberici for
participating.”
On the women’s side, the U.S. elite team and the U.S.
developmental team will both be at Disney’s Wide World of
Sports, taking on Duke, Notre Dame and Florida. The U.S.
women’s team program is coming off a gold-medal World Cup
victory in Prague last July. This is the second year in a row Duke
and the U.S. women’s national team will have played each
other in the Champion Challenge event. Meanwhile, this is both
Notre Dame’s and Florida’s first appearance at Champion
Challenge.
“We are excited to return to Disney’s Wide World of
Sports for this year’s Champion Challenge,” said Ann
Carpenetti, US Lacrosse’s women’s division director.
“Our U.S. women’s national team looks forward to this
event each year and it’s always a display of high-level
athleticism and competitive lacrosse.”
"As the official performance apparel of US Lacrosse, we are very
proud to partner with them on this Champion Challenge event," said
Claire Powell, Director, Champion Brand Marketing. "It's very
exciting to have these elite collegiate teams playing against the
U.S. national teams and it's definitely a great way to kick off the
lacrosse season."
The U.S. men’s and women’s national team program will
offer youth clinics for boys and girls, respectively, on Sat., Jan.
30 from 9 to 11 a.m. Both clinics are for lacrosse players, grades
3-12. The U.S. women’s national team will also offer an
