Team USA Downs Canada at WDNT

May 24, 2008
OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Quinn Carney and Mary Key combined for seven goals and seven assists as the U.S. beat Canada 14-8 on Saturday night to wrap up the first day of the 2008 US Lacrosse Women's Division National Tournament at the McDonogh School, but it was the play of some newcomers that really caught head coach Sue Heether's eye.
Amber Falcone, Mallory Poole and Caitlyn McFadden, all former members of the U.S. Developmental team, were playing with the Elite team for the first time. McFadden and Poole each scored goals and Falcone started and played the entire game on defense.
"We dressed 16 field players, three of which had never played for me before," said Heether. "I don't think in an hour and forty minutes we could have asked for much more. They gave us everything they had with no hesitation without ever playing with us before."
Carney got the U.S. off to quick start with two goals in the first four minutes of the game and scored four of the U.S. team's first five goals. After falling behind 6-2 early, Canada battled back to cut the lead to 7-5 at the half after Brooke McKenzie scored with 23 seconds left.
The U.S. took control from there, scoring the first four goals of the second half with Carney and Key playing a role in all of them. Key scored off a feed from Carney to start the stanza and then Carney and Key added unassisted goals. McFadden closed the run, scoring off a pass from Carney with 16:27 left in the game. Carney had five goals and two assists and Key had two goals and five assists. Michelle DeJuliis also played a big role with three goals. Canada was led by Crysti Foote with three goals and Dana Dobbie with two.
The game was the final one for the U.S. before departing for the Czech Republic next month for the Prague Cup. The 2009 World Cup will also be held in the Czech Republic.
