PETERBOROUGH, Ontario - The United States scored the first five goals of the second half to pull away from Canada for a 17-7 victory before a crowd of 1,400 in the International Lacrosse Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations U-19 World Championship at Trent University on Sunday. Emma Hamm (Wayne, Pa./Baldwin School `07/Duke) scored three of the U.S. goals during the run.
Canada, just 15 hours removed from its stunning 11-8 upset of Australia on Saturday, scored the final two goals of the first half to pull within 7-4 at halftime before the U.S. blew the game open. Josie Owen (Gibson Island, Md./Severn '08), who had eight goals in the U.S. team's opening win over England, had four goals on Sunday to share team scoring honors with Shannon Smith (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon '08).
The U.S. completes pool play action on Monday night when it meets up with archrival Australia at 7 p.m. Australia and the U.S. have met in the championship game of the three previous IFWLA U-19 championships, with Australia winning in 1995 and the U.S. winning in 1999 and 2003.
