OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Kim Kolarik and Brittany
Pastrana combined to make eight saves in goal as Mid Atlantic 1
held off a late charge by New York 1 to capture the Onondaga flight
in the Schoolgirl Division by an 8-7 score at the US Lacrosse
Women's Division National Tournament. The event, sponsored by Brine
and held at the McDonogh School and St. Paul's School, celebrated
its 75th anniversary.
Mid Atlantic 1 had an 8-4 lead late in the game, before New York 1
tallied three goals over the final 90 seconds, but it was too late.
Katie Schwarzmann and Betsy Mastropieri led Mid Atlantic 1 with two
goals each while Stephanie Anderson had two goals for New York
1.
Following the game, Kelly Austin of Mid Atlantic 1 was presented
with the Heather Leigh Albert Award as the outstanding player in
the Schoolgirl Division. Austin is a junior at St. Stephen's &
St. Agnes School. Other finalists for the award were Iliana Sanza
(Mid Atlantic 1, St. Paul's School, Md.), Kelsey Horton (Mid
Atlantic 1, St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School, Va.), Stephanine
Anderson (New York 1, Shoreham Wading River) and Michelle Tumolo
(Upper Atlantic 1, Clearview HS, N.J.)
The other Schoolgirl Division winners were:
Seneca: Lower New England 2 d. Mid Atlantic 4, 8-6
Oneida: Mid Atlantic 6 d. New York 5, 14-8
Tuscarora: New York 6 d. Mid Atlantic 7, 9-8
Mohawk: Lower New England 5 d. Pacific 2, 11-8
Cayuga: Northwest 1 d. Great Lakes 3, 7-6 (OT)
In the high school Seniors Only Division, Mid Atlantic 1 defeated
Upper Atlantic 1 by a score of 11-9. Mid Atlantic jumped out to a
6-1 lead before Upper Atlantic pulled to within one goal on two
separate occasions, but UA was unable to get the equalizer.
Vanderbilt recruit and 2007 U.S. U-19 team member Allyson Carey had
two goals and five draw controls for Mid Atlantic, which also got
two goals each from Grace Gaeng (Maryland), Oliva Knotts (Cornell)
and Hadley Lankford (Dartmouth).
In the Club Division, New England overcame an early 3-0 deficit to
beat Upper Atlantic 9-5 for the President's Cup. Greta Meyer
(Dartmouth) had three goals to lead New England.
