Georgetown: Former Georgetown Lax Players Merrill and Sweeney Selected to MLL All-Star Game

Washington, D.C. - Former Georgetown University men's lacrosse players Brodie Merrill and Kyle Sweeney were selected to play in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) All-Star Game. The seventh-annual MLL All-Star game will be held on Thursday, July 17 at 8 p.m. (MT) at Denver's INVESCO Field at Mile High. The All-Stars were selected by the League's head coaches, general managers and players.
Merrill, a defenseman, of the Rochester Rattlers has been selected to play on the Eastern Conference Squad. Merrill originally hails from Montreal, Quebec, and earned All-American honors in his junior and senior seasons. In addition, Merrill was named the 2005 ECAC Defensive Player of the Year and was awarded Outstanding Division I Defensive Player of the Year his senior season.
This will be Merrill's third consecutive season named as an MLL All-Star. Merrill is second on his team in groundballs and is second among defensemen in the League in points this year. Merrill was the League's Cascade Rookie of the Year in 2005 and was awarded Warrior Defensive Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007.
Sweeney, a defenseman for the Philadelphia Barrage, has also been selected to play on the Eastern Conference Squad. While at Georgetown, he was named First-Team All-American by USILA in 2002 and Second Team in 2003. Sweeney was additionally named ECAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002, and earned ECAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2000.
As one of the anchors of Philadelphia's defensive unit, he has collected 30 groundballs so far this season. This will be Sweeney's third All-Star appearance.
For the second consecutive year, the MLL All-Star Game will match-up players from the Eastern Conference against their Western Conference counterparts. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 with Joe Beninati and Quint Kessenich calling the action and will once again feature the popular Bud Light Skills Competition during halftime.
