NLL Week 3 Awards: All Colorado, Philly Winners
from press releases
The National Lacrosse League has announced the winners of the weekly player awards for Week 3 of the NLL season.
John Grant Jr. and Adam Jones of the Colorado Mammoth are the NLL's Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for Week 3. Both were unanimous selections in a vote by the general managers and head coaches of the league's nine member clubs.
Grant and Jones played huge roles to help Colorado complete a two-game sweep on consecutive nights last week in Edmonton and Calgary.
Grant had the game-tying and winning markers among five goals with four assists, and collected six loose balls in a 13-12 win over the Edmonton Rush on Friday. Grant then notched four goals, six assists and became the fifth player in NLL history with 1,000 career points in a 13-12 overtime win Saturday over the Calgary Roughnecks.
"John continues to impress me, and Adam is quickly making a name for himself in the NLL," said Mammoth head coach Bob Hamley. "They were exceptional in both games."
In Edmonton on Friday, Grant scored the game-tying goal with less than four minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, and followed with the game-winner with 14.5 seconds left. He finished with nine points. Meanwhile, Jones registered five goals and three assists, including a helper on Grant's game-winner.
On Saturday night, Grant tacked on another ten points (4G, 6A), the third being the 1,000th of his career. Jones had three goals and three assists, including the final two scores in regulation to send the game to overtime. In the extra frame, Prout's game-winner was assisted by the two award-winners.
"It feels great," said Jones, when asked about being named rookie of the week. "It definitely wasn't an expectation of mine, to win an award like that. At the same time, it's a good feeling."
Goaltender Brandon Miller of the Philadelphia Wings was picked as the defensive player of the week while teammate Brodie Merrill collected transition player of the week honors.
Miller stopped 49 of 58 shots and allowed only two goals on eight power-play chances as the Wings topped the Washington Stealth 10-9 in overtime on Saturday.
Merrill picked up 13 loose balls in the victory, evening the Wings' record at 1-1.
The weekly player award winners are selected by a vote of the league's General Managers and Head Coaches.
