Knighthawks Add Punch with Vitarelli, Rubel
from press release
Rochester Knighthawks Owner and General Manager Curt Styres announced two key signings today, as the team added rising lacrosse star Cory Vitarelli and veteran defenseman Ian Rubel to the team. Vitarelli signed a three-year contract, while Rubel agreed to a two-year deal. Both deals are pending league approval.
Vitarelli will wear the teal and purple of the Knighthawks in 2011 after a five-year wait. The Peterborough, Ontario, native is currently in his fifth season of hockey with the University of Prince Edward Island and is second on his team with 24 points (12+12) in 15 games. Despite his success on the ice, the Knighthawks' former fifth-round selection will follow his dream of playing pro lacrosse this season.
"I am definitely happy to be part of the Knighthawks," said Vitarelli. "I've played with some guys in the summer and I'm excited to play alongside them."
The 25-year-old played a major role for the Peterborough Lakers' 2010 Mann Cup championship team, as he finished tied for second with 12 goals in the finals. With the Lakers, Vitarelli played with Knighthawks Scott and Shawn Evans, Kevin Fines, Kyle Laverty and Steve Toll. The Cup was Vitarelli's second with Peterborough after capturing his first in 2007. His addition adds more firepower to the Knighthawks lineup.
"I am very excited," said Styres. "He is a big, powerful lefty and can fill that spot."
In the past four seasons he has played in 44 games with the Lakers, registering 39 goals and 40 assists. More impressive are his playoff numbers, where he has 43 goals and 35 assists in 44 games. Vitarelli also played junior lacrosse in the Lakers system from 2001 to 2006 and won a Minto Cup in 2006.
"He is a lefty defenseman and is one of the best in the business," said Styres of Rubel. "I have always liked the way he played."
Rubel has played nine seasons in NLL after appearing in two games with Minnesota in 2009. In his career, the stay-at-home defenseman has played in 90 games and recorded two goals, 11 assists and 148 loose balls. He is excited to get the opportunity to play in the NLL again.
Rubel is a three-time Champion's Cup winning defenseman. The 32 year old was acquired along with Aaron Bold and Cody Johnson, from Minnesota on October 14, 2009. Styres was impressed last year when he was included in a trade with the Swarm. The St. Catharines, Ontario, native won titles with the Toronto Rock in 2002, 2003 and 2005. In the 2002 Championship game he recorded one goal and one assist. He also played four seasons of senior lacrosse: three with Victoria (2000-02) and one with Brampton (2004). In 2002, he was voted Victoria's Best Defenseman and he was named the team's Most Improved Player in 2001.
The Knighthawks will open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, January 15th against the Toronto Rock at 7:35 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena. To order tickets, fans can call (585) 454-5335 or go online to Knighthawks.net.
