Tavares' OT Goal Sends Buffalo over Toronto

from press release

TORONTO – The Toronto Rock lost an overtime heartbreaker 11-10 to the Buffalo Bandits at the Air Canada Centre. Their second home loss of the season puts Toronto 6-5 on the season.

Steve Dietrich and Bob Watson combined for 31 saves. Kasey Beirnes recorded a hat trick and Colin Doyle had one goal and four assists for Toronto.

Mike Thompson recorded the win in Buffalo’s net stopping 52 of 62 Rock shots. John Tavares led the Bandits with three goals -- including the game-winner in overtime -- and three assists.

Kasey Beirnes opened game scoring, but Mark Steenhuis answered back for Buffalo. Kevin Dostie, Ken Montour and Mike Accursi all got past Rock netminder Steve Dietrich gaving Buffalo the 4-1 lead.

Dostie struck again to start the second, but Toronto got back onto the board with and four-goal run from Stephan Leblanc, Mike Hominuck and Blaine Manning, Beirnes to tie up the game at five before Steenhuis and Montour got past Watson who replaced Dietrich early in the second quarter.  Beirnes collected the hat trick with five seconds left on the clock sending the teams into the second half with the Bandits leading 7-6.

Colin Doyle started off the third quarter scoring Toronto’s seventh goal to tie the game. Buffalo veteran John Tavares drained back-to-back goals. Defence controlled the game for the next nine minutes until Garrett Billings closed the gap, scoring with 18 seconds left on the clock.

The fourth quarter started with Buffalo leading 9-8 until Josh Wasson scored to tie it up.  Dostie netted his third. Down by one with two seconds left on the clock Billings scored the tying goal, sending the game into overtime.

Tavares scored at the top of sudden-death overtime to give Buffalo the win.
