NLL: Calgary Promotes Pym; Malawsky an Assistant
from press release
CALGARY, Alberta -- The Calgary Roughnecks
announced today that Dave Pym has accepted the Roughnecks' Head
Coach position, while forward Curt Malawsky has accepted the
position of Assistant General Manager, as well as Assistant Coach
(Offense). Details have yet to be released, and more will follow
with an official announcement.
"We're pleased to finally get to the point where we can hire
within Alberta a head coach with Dave Pym's qualities," said
Roughnecks' President and General Manager Brad Banister.
"He has been with our team for four years, and we're pleased that
we're finally going to be able to hire within the system of the
Alberta Lacrosse Association."
Pym has been playing an influential role on the Roughnecks
coaching staff for the past four years. Before being named the
Roughnecks' Assistant Coach and Offence Coordinator in 2007, Pym
was the club's premier scout.
"It has and will continue to be an honour and a
wonderful privilege to work for owners, management and
staff who share the same character, determination and
hard work as that of the players who so proudly wear the
Roughneck jersey," said Pym.
Apart from the Roughnecks, Pym works as a Claims Manager with
Stantec Consulting Ltd., a multi-discipline design company. Pym
currently resides in Sherwood Park, Alberta with his family.
Prior to taking on the Assistant Manager/Offensive Assistant Coach
role, Malawsky spent many years in the National Lacrosse League as
a player. The 39-year-old made his NLL debut with Rochester in 1998
and stayed with the team until 2003.
"Curt and I are cut from a very similar cloth," added Pym.
"Curt is a warrior in this league and was rewarded this
past May with the ultimate prize. He will take
over offensive responsibilities and we will be interviewing
for a defensive coach next week."
Until joining the Roughnecks in 2008, Malawsky played with
Vancouver, San Jose and Arizona. Malawsky earned his first
Championship ring this past May, helping the Roughnecks win the
coveted NLL title over the New York Titans.
Malawsky currently resides in Maple Ridge, British Columbia and
works as an electrical Supervisor.
"Bringing Malawsky in as a technical director, assistant coach and
assistant GM is not only going to help me but definitely help
rekindle what was lost with Terry and Troy leaving," added
Banister.
"He has a strong desire to win, he's motivated and his heart is
above all in the game, so we're happy."
