New York Jumps All Over Florida in 20-11 Win
Scoring six of the first seven goals, the Lizards opened a big lead against the Launch at home and never looked back, improving to 6-4 on the year and moving into third place in the MLL standings behind Denver and Rochester, both of whom play later in the weekend.
Rob Pannell had four goals and four assists for New York, opening the game with an unassisted goal just 1:46 after the opening draw and scoring at least one point in each quarter. Tommy Palasek and Michael Kimmel each chipped in five points, with Palasek potting five goals and Kimmel going for two goals and three assists. JoJo Marasco (3G, 1A) and Matt Gibson (3G) also had hat-tricks for the Lizards, which got to 20 despite scoring zero two-point shots.
Greg Gurenlian went 14-for-20 at the X for New York while Drew Adams earned the win by making nine saves.
Florida, which falls to 4-6 and into the bottom half of the standings ahead of only Ohio and Chesapeake at this point, scored just four goals in the first half and was outscored in all but the third, where it matched New York with five goals each.
Casey Powell (3G, 2A) and Stephen Keogh (3G, 1A) were the anchors for the Launch, but Florida couldn't get closer than a six goal gap down the stretch in spite of going on a four-goal run to close out the third quarter. Niko Amato made six saves in his professional debut, facing 26 shots from New York, which moved into first in the league's goals scored race with 129 on the year (though Ohio and Rochester, just 10 and 11 back, respectively, have yet to play this weekend.)
With Major League Lacrosse on break next week for the FIL World Championships in Commerce City Colorado, both teams will have plenty of time to sort things out and prepare for their next matchups. The Lizards take on Boston on the road on Saturday, July 19th, while Florida pays a visit to the league-leading Denver Outlaws on Sunday the 20th.
