CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A week after snapping the Denver Outlaws Major League Lacrosse record 25-game winning streak, the Charlotte Hounds put together their first winning streak of the season, topping the Florida Launch 14-13 on Saturday.
In a tightly contested first half, game MVP Mike Sawyer (three goals, one assist) got the Hounds off to an early lead. But reigning MLL MVP Kevin Crowley (four goals) helped the Launch keep pace, as the game was tied 7-7 at halftime.
After Florida took a 9-8 lead on a goal by MLL leading scorer Casey Powell, Charlotte scored the next five goals, capped by Sawyer’s first 2-point tally of the season. Powell and Stephen Keogh tried to bring the Launch back in the fourth quarter, but their efforts fell short, as the Hounds held on for a one-goal win.
Powell finished with two goals and three assists to remain atop the MLL's scoring lead with 34 points. Sawyer, Mike Chanenchuk (two goals, two assists) and Justin Ward (one goal, three assists) led the Hounds with four points each.
Brett Queener made 14 saves in the loss for Florida, while Adam Ghitelman also stopped 14 shots, but in a winning effort for Charlotte.
The Hounds, with consecutive wins for the first time this season, now sit at 3-4 and will travel to New York next week to take on the Lizards. The Launch fell to 4-3 and will host the Rochester Rattlers in a battle for second place in the MLL standings.
