Denver Tops Lizards to Stay Perfect at 13-0
from Press Release
The Denver Outlaws remain unbeaten, moving to 13-0 after defeating the Lizards 13-10 in New York on Sunday. The Outlaws, who are one win away from securing a perfect regular season record—a feat never before accomplished in Major League Lacrosse—have already clinched the number one overall seed for Championship Weekend presented by Smartlink, in Philadelphia on August 24 and 25.
New York's Kevin Unterstein netted the first goal of the contest three minutes in, but was followed by a Denver goal from Justin Pennington, assisted by Chris Bocklet. New York regained the lead off an unassisted goal by Jo-Jo Marasco; the goal was the first of the former Syracuse midfielder's career. Denver's Jeremy Sieverts scored an unassisted goal five minutes later to make it 2-2, but Stephen Mock scored for the Lizards off an assist from his Cornell teammate, Rob Pannel, giving New York the 3-2 advantage through one quarter.
Denver started the second quick, as Bocklet and Sieverts scored off assists from Sieverts and Terry Kimener, respectively, to gain their first advantage of the match. Pannell, New York's rookie All-Star, responded, though, with an unassisted goal of his own, tying the game back up at four a piece. The teams traded goals the rest of the period; Zach Greer and Sieverts both netted a goal for the visitors, and Marasco and David Earl each scored for New York to head into the locker rooms tided up, 6-6.
Much like the first two quarters, the third was a close one. New York came out hot, with goals from Pannell and Unterstein, less than 50 seconds into the period. Denver, like they have done all season, responded, this time with goals from the Bocklet Brothers—both attackman Chris and long pole Matt—to even the match once again. Another goal from Marasco and a Denver goal from Drew Snider kept it even heading into the final quarter.
The Outlaws pulled away in the fourth, showing the world why they're undefeated and the number one seed for Championship Weekend. Goals from Pennington, Kimener and Bocklet stretched the lead to three for the Outlaws halfway through the period. Earl scored his second for the Lizards, but it wasn't enough as Eric Law scored for the Outlaws to increase the lead back to three and secure the win for the visitors; 13-10 Denver.
Next week, Denver takes on the Hamilton Nationals on Saturday at 3:00p.m. ET. The battle between the two playoff teams can be seen live on CBS Sports Network. New York will host Ohio next weekend to finish off their season, in a Saturday night matchup which will be televised live at 7p.m. ET locally and also broadcast on ESPN3.com.
