MLL Re-Names All-Star Teams for Saturday
from LaxMagazine.com Staff Reports
Major League Lacrosse announced that the team names for Saturday's All-Star Game would be the Supernova and Eclipse on Tuesday afternoon, replacing the original selections after negative fan reactions to the original choices which had been announced Monday.
Originally, the team names had been announced as the 'Funk Meisters' and the 'Homewreckers', titles taken from menu items at title sponsor Mo's Southwest Grill restaurants. The names had been selected by the league after being submitted via a contest on the league's various social media outlets. After some negative fan reaction, the league announced that it would change the names and issued an apology to anyone who may have been offended by the name choice.
The new names were selected to reflect the celestial nature of an All-Star game, hence Supernova and Eclipse.
Players will be sorted to one squad or the other based on a playground-style selection process by winners of the league's 'Ultimate Fan Fantasy' contest, Frank Ranfone (Supernova) and Cameron MacKenzie (Eclipse). That selection will take place on Friday evening in Charlotte, with the game slated to face-off at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
This selection process was also used in 2011 on the league's annual All-Star contest, which has taken several forms of team selection since the league stopped having two separate divisions in 2008. Last year, as well as in 2009 and 2005, the team was played in an 'Old School' vs. 'Young Guns' fashion, with veterans and recent college graduates separated onto the different rosters. In 2006 and 2010, the MLL had one All-Star team, which played in the exhibition against Team USA (which was also stocked with MLL players) as a warm-up for that summer's FIL World Championship.
The team jerseys, which will be white/blue (Supernova) and black/gold (eclipse) will be auctioned off after the game is played to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the official charity of the 2013 MLL All-Star Game.
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
