Major League Lacrosse announced Tuesday that defenseman Lee Zink of the Denver Outlaws has been named as the 2012 Warrior MLL Defensive Player of the Year, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross.
The award was based on the votes submitted by the head coach and general manager of each of the League's eight teams. Hamilton defenseman Brodie Merrill has won the award in each of the previous six seasons.
"It's a great honor to be recognized by former players, coaches and GMs. I've been really excited about this season; we have a great team and I'm excited about the upcoming weekend," Zink said.
A nine-year MLL veteran, Zink played in 13 games while helping the Denver Outlaws claim their first MLL regular season title since 2009. He recorded 17 ground balls, including a season-high three ground balls in a win over Rochester on June 16.
Zink has played in 103 career games and has recorded 211 ground balls. He helped the Baltimore Bayhawks win the 2005 MLL Championship and has played in 12 or more regular season games in six of his nine seasons.
"Warrior is proud to present MLL veteran Lee Zink with the well deserved honor of Defensive Player of the Year," said Dave Dixon, Warrior Chief Marketing Officer. "Lee continues to be a defensive stalwart in MLL and his efforts on the field are admired by all of us at Warrior."
The MLL Championship Weekend presented by Warrior will be held on August 25 and 26 at Harvard Stadium. The top-seeded Denver Outlaws will face the fourth-seeded Long Island Lizards in the first semi-final at 1 p.m. before the second-seeded Chesapeake Bayhawks will play against the defending MLL champion Boston Cannons, who earned the third seed, in the second semi-final at approximately 4 p.m.
The two semi-final winners will play in the championship game on Sunday, August 26 at 3 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or by clicking here.
Zink is also a member of Team USA's "Duel in Denver" squad that will play Canada Sept. 8 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
