MLL Week 6 Awards: Westervelt, Karalunas, Bocklet

BOSTON – Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending June 10, 2012, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Chesapeake Bayhawks attackman Drew Westervelt was selected as the League's Offensive Player of the Week while Long Island Lizards defenseman Brian Karalunas has been honored as the Defensive Player of the Week.
Meanwhile, Denver Outlaws attackman Chris Bocklet was named as the Cascade Rookie of the Week.
In leading the Bayhawks to a 15-7 victory over the Charlotte Hounds and sole possession of first place in the MLL standings on Saturday, Westervelt tallied a season-high five points by scoring four goals with an assist. He scored of his four goals in the first quarter as the Bayhawks jumped out a commanding 7-1 advantage. The former UMBC standout also added a goal in the second quarter, giving Chesapeake an 11-4 advantage at the intermission.
The Bayhawks' third-leading scorer with 17 points this season, Westervelt is tied for second on the team with 10 goals and has a team-high seven assists.
Meanwhile, Karalunas played an integral role in the Lizards' 13-10 win over the defending MLL champion Boston Cannons on Saturday night. In addition to helping the Lizards hold Boston scoreless for the final 24 minutes of the game, he also kept Cannons attackman Ryan Boyle without a point for just the second time in Boyle's nine-year MLL career, snapping a streak of 61 straight games with a point.
Karalunas has appeared in five games this season for the Lizards and has eight ground balls. The former Villanova University defender also tallied an assist in the season opener against Chesapeake on April 28.
Making his MLL debut, Bocklet scored three goals and added an assist as the Denver Outlaws earned a 16-8 victory over the Ohio Machine at Selby Stadium on Saturday night. He tallied all four of his points in the third quarter as Denver extended its lead to 15-2. After scoring back-to-back goals midway through the third quarter, he tallied an assist on a goal by midfielder Jordan McBride with 2:14 left in the period. Bocklet added his third goal of the game with 1:18 remaining off an assist from attackman Brendan Mundorf.
The former University of Virginia standout was selected in the fourth round of the MLL Collegiate Draft in January. A three-time USILA All-America selection, Bocklet earned honorable mention notice as a senior after leading the Cavaliers to the NCAA quarter-finals. He finished his collegiate career with 137 career goals, which ranks fifth in Virginia history, along with 28 assists.
The 2012 MLL season reaches its midway point on Saturday with four intriguing games. The MLL-leading Bayhawks will host the Hamilton Nationals at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium while the Boston Cannons travel to Charlotte to face the Hounds at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Meanwhile, the Ohio Machine will host the Long Island Lizards and the Denver Outlaws return to Sports Authority Field at Mile High to entertain the Rochester Rattlers.
