Once a hound, always a hound.
Eric Lusby, the breakout star of the Loyola Greyhounds' NCAA men's championship team, is now a member of Major League Lacrosse's Charlotte Hounds.
The league announced Wednesday that twelve undrafted college seniors were picked up by MLL teams through the league's waiver wire process. Teams had the opportunity to place waiver claims on any college player not drafted in January's 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft and who registered for the MLL Player Pool between May 31 and June 7.
Lusby, who sat out 2011 with a torn ACL, was one of them and has become arguably the biggest undrafted rookie pick-up since the league starting holding its draft before the collegiate season of eligible seniors two years ago.
Lusby finished his career as the NCAA tournament's most outstanding player after scoring a tourney record with 17 goals and surpassing teammate Mike Sawyer for the team's scoring lead along the way.
"It has always been something I have wanted to do, play professional lacrosse and with the best players everywhere," Lusby said Wednesday in a statement through Loyola athletics. "This has probably been the best six months of my entire life, the success we've had, the time with the coaches and then winning a national championship.
"I want to thank all of the coaches at Loyola. Coach [Dan] Chemotti changed the offense a little bit this year, and it was such a fun year to be able to play in that. This was the best five years of my life, and I have my coaches and teammates to thank for that."
The order of the waiver wire was determined by current standings; the eighth place team placed claims first, and so on. The Denver Outlaws and the Boston Cannons did not elect to claim any player from the waiver wire.
The players acquired through the MLL waiver wire process will be eligible to play beginning in Week 7 of the 2012 season. Week 6 is this weekend. Players that were not selected will return to the MLL Player Pool. On Thursday, June 7, teams will have an opportunity to acquire any players from the MLL Player Pool.
