Boyle, Turner Lead Cannons over LI in Opener

The Boston Cannons (1-0) kicked off the 2011 season with a 15-12 win over the Long Island Lizards (0-1) in front of 9,122 fans at Harvard Stadium on Saturday. Ryan Boyle was the Bud Light Player of the Game with three goals and four assists for a total of seven points. Goalie Kip Turner also had a strong performance with 21 saves.

Stephen Peyser opened the scoring with a two point goal for the Lizards. The Cannons quickly answered back with four unanswered goals from Pat Heim, Kevin Buchanan, Max Quinzani (Duxbury) and Mike Stone (Wellesley). Stone's goal was a two-pointer to help bring the Cannons to a 4-2 lead heading into the second quarter.

Long Island began the second quarter strong as they broke down the Cannons' defense for two goals within the first minute to tie up the score at four. Brad Ross scored a two point goal with the assist from JJ Morrissey, a Winchester native picked up in the 2010 MLL Supplemental Draft. After trading possessions and goals, the Cannons took a 7-6 lead into the break.

After a four-goal third quarter to maintain the lead with an 11-8 advantage going into the fourth, 2010 MLL Bud Light MVP Matt Poskay scored his first goal of the season after a face off win from Chris Eck and an assist from Boyle. In an evenly matched final quarter with both teams scoring four goals, the Cannons came away with the win, 15-12.

The Cannons host the Denver Outlaws next Saturday at Harvard Stadium at 7 p.m.
