Bayhawks' Top Pick Has Time to Adjust
With a veteran defense in place, the Bayhawks need not rush Barney Ehrmann into action, but his speed and handle might demand it sooner than later.

Major League Lacrosse turned the rookie draft on its head this year, holding it not only for the first time before the start of the MLL season, but also before the start of the spring college season.
In January, MLL's six teams drafted college seniors whose eligibility would run out at end of this college season. Those players still had a year to play, so general managers and coaches hoped players stayed healthy and watched this spring with intrigue. With the MLL season beginning Saturday for all six teams, draftees will soon join the pro league if their college seasons are already over, or will get set to join teams once they end.
Here's a look at the Chesapeake Bayhawks for the 2011 MLL season — with a rookie emphasis.
Coach: Brendan Kelly
Top pick: D Barney Ehrmann, Georgetown, No. 24 overall
"Having the best defense in the league will help Barney adjust to the pro game," Bayhawks general manager Spencer Ford said. "It's a game that is extremely fast, which makes it difficult for a young player. He is a dominant player with great speed and can handle the ball. He will adjust quickly and be a valuable part of the best unit in the league."
Chesapeake didn't have a draft pick until the last pick of the fourth round, thus their first pick being No. 24 overall.
He joins: M Kyle Dixon, M Dan Hardy, D Mike Evans, M Alex Smith, M Matt Abbott, D Kyle Hartzell
Other draft picks: M Steve DeNapoli, Hofstra; D Dan Hostetler, Georgetown; M John Austin, Delaware; A Andrew Feinberg, Brown; G Tom Palesky, Army; D Max Schmidt, Maryland
The defending champs have what many around the league consider the best team coming back and great chemistry, from the front office and owner/coach Brendan Kelly to the players.
"Chesapeake has a great group," said BJ O'Hara, the Rochester coach. "They're local, so their practices and organization are among the best in the league. Having Dave Cottle involved now gives them a lot of expertise."

Cottle, the former Maryland coach, is team president and an assistant coach. Players credited him with providing insightful scouting reports and player analysis during the Bayhawks' run to the championship last season. His stamp is all over this team.
