Kimmel, Bayhawks Clips Cannons in Overtime
from press release
The Boston Cannons (8-4) fell to the Chesapeake Bayhawks (6-6)
by a score of 16-15 in sudden death overtime at Harvard Stadium in
Boston, MA Saturday night in front of an energetic crowd of 8,161.
The Bayhawks’ Michael Kimmel was named Bud Light MVP for his
two goal evening including the winning tally in overtime. The two
teams will have a rematch on Saturday August 21 at 12:00 Noon in
the first semi-finals game at the 2010 MLL Championship Weekend in
Annapolis, MD.
Looking to close out the regular season on a high note, the Cannons
got off to a hot start, getting a goal from Kyle Sweeney and a pair
from rookie Max Quinzani to take an early 3-0 lead.
Chesapeake’s Ben Hunt responded shortly thereafter with a
pair of unassisted goals to pull the Bayhawks within one. Momentum
returned to Boston to end the quarter as Brad Ross rifled home a
two-point tally and Matt Poskay joined the 50-point club with his
43rd goal of the season.
Paul Rabil scored just 43 seconds into the second quarter but
Chesapeake controlled play and made the game close with an
impressive quarter. Ben Rubeor scored a pair of goals and Michael
Kimmel, Jeff Reynolds and Ray Megill also found the back of the net
for the Bayhawks. Justin Smith added the lone other Boston goal as
the half came to a close with the Cannons clinging to an 8-7
advantage.
As the game turned physical in the third it was the Bayhawks who
would strike first, tying the game 8-8 on Brian Carroll’s
fifth goal of the season. The Cannons took the lead back less than
a minute later as Quinzani notched his third goal of the evening
after Sweeney delivered a punishing hit on a Chesapeake midfielder.
Poskay and Rabil gave the Cannons some breathing room as they
scored back-to-back goals to give Boston an 11-8 lead. Rubeor and
Quinzani traded goals toward the end of the quarter as the Cannons
headed into the fourth with a three goal cushion.
In a back-and-forth final quarter, Chesapeake rallied to force
overtime. Smith had two goals in the quarter and Poskay added
another but the Cannons were unable to close out the pesky
Bayhawks. Ben Wright and Kyle Dixon notched 2-point goals to lead a
furious late charge. Peet Pollion added a goal of his own but it
was Dixon’s short-handed unassisted goal with just 42 seconds
left that sent the game into sudden death.
In sudden death it was Kimmel’s unassisted goal that
propelled the Bayhawks to a victory and gave them momentum headed
into their rematch with Boston on Championship Weekend in two
weeks
