FIL World Cup Day 1: Australia Rolls by Wales

Beyond Team USA's 17-7 win over England, there was plenty of other action at the first day of the 2013 FIL World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario, including Pool A foes Australia and Wales, who played to an 11-4 Australia victory.

The Aussies, who recently lost star midfielder Jen Adams to a torn ACL, rallied to take a strong day one win over the Welsh, jumping to a 6-1 lead at the half and holding on for the win.

Sonia LaMonica led the charge with two goals and two assists, while teammate Marlee Paton earned Player of the Match honors by scoring two goals with a team-high six shots. Goalie Sue McSolvin had five saves in the win, including four in the second half.

Wales was led by Ros Lloyd Rout's hat-trick, with Laura Warren adding a pair of assists.

Both teams are in action again on Friday, with Wales taking on England at 5:30 p.m. followed by Australia and Canada facing off at 8 p.m. Both games will be covered on LaxMagazine.com

Japan 31, Hong Kong 2
Player of the Match - Japan's Ryoko Ikura

Ryoko Ikura had a whopping 16 points to lead Japan to an easy victory over Hong Kong, jumping out to an 18-2 lead at the half and holding their opponent scoreless in the second. Rie Mito (5G, 3A, Eriko Ogawa (6G) and Nanae Iizuka (5, 1) also had big games for Japan, which faces Austria at 3PM on Friday.

Hong Kong plays Haudenosauee on Friday at 10AM, and saw Keiko Muramuatsu and Allison Lee score its first-half goals.

Ireland 15, Latvia 4
Player of the Match - Ireland's Claire Halliday

Olivia Jackson led the Irish with six goals, while Claire Halliday earned player of the match honors for her four goal, five draw control effort. Kaitlyn Leidl had two goals and three assists for Ireland.

Latvia, playing in its first ever FIL World Cup, got two goals from Gretchen Lasda and a one goal, five ground ball effort from Rachel Lasda in the loss.

Haudenosaunee 28, Sweden 1
Player of the Match - Haudenosaunee's Naomi Walser

Naomi Walser had five goals and five assists to lead the Haudenosauee to a lopsided win over first-time FIL participant Sweden in pool play. Erin Francis (5G, 4A) and Awehiyo Thomas (5, 1) also had big games in the win.

Anneli Jonsson had Sweden's only goal in its debut, while Ebba Ovren controlled six draws.

Player of the Match - New Zealand's Tori Lelo

Victoria Lelo's six points (5G, 1A) led the Kiwis to an opening day win, aided by hat-tricks from Sarah Butler (3, 1) and Katie Knaus, who also controlled six draws.

Finland got a goal and an assist from Sinikka Ijas, while goalie Katri Tanninen made nine saves.
