Fried Named Head Coach of U.S. Women's Team
from press release
BALTIMORE -- The US Lacrosse Women's Division
Board of Governors voted to approve the recommendation of the
National Teams Coach Selection committee to name Ricky Fried as the
2009-2013 U.S. Women's National Team Head Coach. Fried was selected
after a six month-long selection process, which concluded following
the 2009 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup, where
Fried served as one of the assistant coaches to the gold medal
winning U.S. team.
"After the gold-medal success of our women's World Cup team this
June, we look forward to working with Ricky Fried over the next
four years to build upon the strong foundation that US Lacrosse and
its national team program has developed," said Ann Carpenetti, US
Lacrosse's women's division director. "As the head coach at
Georgetown University and as a coaching staff member of the 2009
U.S. World Cup Team, Ricky has shown that he is a proven leader and
successful coach in the women's collegiate and international
lacrosse world who is both respected and admired by his players and
his peers. His strengths, as recognized by the selection committee
included his experience in women's lacrosse, his commitment to
growing the sport and desire to keep learning and teaching the game
and finally, his character and integrity."
"I am honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the
next U.S. Team," said Fried. "After this past World Cup experience,
I am very grateful to my predecessor, Sue Heether, for giving me
the opportunity to work and learn at the international level. It
was a fantastic experience and we will work hard to build on this
past team's success."
In five seasons as the head coach at Georgetown, Fried has led the
Hoyas to a record of 62-30, three Big East conference championships
and two trips to the NCAA quarterfinals. In 2009, the Hoyas went
13-6 and reached the NCAA tournament. Before becoming the head
coach at Georgetown, Fried was an assistant coach at the school in
2003 and 2004.
Prior to Georgetown, Fried was an assistant coach at Johns Hopkins
University for nine seasons. While at the school, Fried served as
the recruiting coordinator and helped build Hopkins into a Division
I Top 20 program.
A 1988 graduate of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County
(UMBC), Fried was an All-American midfielder for the Retrievers
lacrosse team. As a senior, he served as team captain, was named
the team's Most Valuable Player and earned the team's Leadership
Award. He was named to UMBC's All-Time Team in 1990. Fried arrived
at Hopkins following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at the
Gilman School. He also played professionally with the Philadelphia
Wings from 1989 through 1992 and the Baltimore Thunder from 1993
through 1994 and 1997.
Fried is also active in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse
Coaches Association (IWLCA) and is currently the organization's
vice president. He serves on its ethics and recruiting tournaments
committees. Additionally, he is the chair of the Regional
All-American Committee and is a member of the Tewaaraton Trophy
Selection Committee.
Fried's first duty will be to oversee the U.S. women's
developmental team tryouts at UMBC, August 1-3. In the coming
months, a selection committee will appoint a U.S. women's
developmental team head coach and U.S. U-19 women's national team
head coach.
