Player of the Week
Lindsay Darrell, senior midfielder, West Islip (N.Y.)
Darrell, a Northwestern recruit, netted the winner with one second remaining to lift the Lions to a 12-11 win over Middle Country (N.Y.) in the Section XI (Suffolk County) Class A semifinals last Wednesday. Darrell finished with two goals, two assists, and 11 ground balls. She also won 16 of 24 draws. She has 39 goals and 29 assists this season. West Islip faces Hauppauge (N.Y.) in the sectional championship on Thursday. The Lions slipped past the Eagles, 12-11 in overtime, during the regular season.
Game of the Week
West Genesee (N.Y.) vs. Cicero-North Syracuse (N.Y.), May 27, Section III Class A Tournament Final, at Syracuse.
Both the Wildcats and the Northstars enter this championship matchup at 16-1. West Genny's lone loss is top Class C powerhouse Skaneateles, while C-NS's lone defeat came earlier in the regular season to the Wildcats by a 10-7 score. In that April 15th matchup, Riley Donahue and Hannah Elmer each tallied three goals and one assist and Katherine Widrick recorded seven saves to power the Wildcats. And if that wasn't enough, C-NS ended West Genny's season last year. C-NS topped West Genny, 7-6, in last season's sectional semifinals. This should be a fun one inside the cavernous Carrier Dome.
