Big Shots: Carmen Taplin, Hillsboro (Ore.)

by Jeff Seidel | Special to Lacrosse Magazine Online

WHO SHE IS: Carmen Taplin is a senior at Hillsboro High School in Oregon. She plays attack wing on the varsity lacrosse team and is in her second year as captain. She is headed to Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., to play for its Division III team next year. Taplin looks to have a double major in sociology and social work with a focus on criminal justice/criminology and wants to be a criminal profiler. She began lacrosse in eighth grade, and her career took off quickly.

WHAT SHE DID:
Taplin scored 11 goals and had two assists as Hillsboro won for the first time in three years, beating Tualatin High, 14-12, on April 8. She had a hand in 13 of the 14 goals that night, as the Spartans broke their long losing streak. Through 10 games,  Hillsboro has found some success and is 3-8 this year. Taplin leads the way, scoring 47 goals and handing out 14 assists through the Spartans' first 10 games. Taplin also was the team’s top scorer last year.

WHY WE NOTICED: Taplin had suffered through a lot of losing during her time on the varsity. Hillsboro won once during her freshman year three years ago and went winless the last two years. But she’s been the top scorer, as the Spartans have played better this year. They won two of three at one point, showing glimpses of turning the corner.

WHAT SHE SAID: “This was unbelievable and really cool, because in the past, we’ve tried so hard but we haven’t gotten there. It was amazing to win the (Tualatin) game, and it was a team effort. It was just incredible, because our passing game and our offense just really came together, and our defense just stepped it up immensely. It was kind of hard to believe, and my little brother, who is our team manager, kept flashing fingers to me telling me how many goals I was at. I was like, ‘Are you kidding?’ The winning was the coolest thing. It was amazing. We were able to go back to school the next day and say we won. We did it. We’re getting our fans back. That’s the coolest thing.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Hillsboro visits Glencoe on Monday. The Spartans lost to the Tide earlier this season.
