Player of the Week
Eamon Campbell, St. Anthony's (N.Y.)
The junior attackman scored the game-winner with 27.9 seconds left in regulation to lift the Friars to an 8-7 win over rival Chaminade (N.Y.) in a key CHSAA regular season matchup. Chaminade knocked off St. Anthony's, 8-7, in overtime in the team's first regular season meeting this year. Campbell scored the winner off a feed from Mike Laviano. Campbell finished with two goals and one assist. There is a chance that the teams could meet again in two weeks in the CHSAA championship game.
Game of the Week
Victor (N.Y.) at Fairport (N.Y.), May 15
There is unprecedented depth and balance among the top teams in Section V (Rochester, N.Y. area) this year. Across the three classes (A, B, and C), the top teams have beaten up on each other. We should get a little clarity when Fairport (12-2) plays at Victor (12-2) on Thursday. Fairport already has impressive wins over Pittsford (N.Y.), Penn Yan (N.Y.), and West Genesee (N.Y.). The Red Raiders have lost to Jamesville-DeWitt and Penfield (N.Y.) this season. Victor's resume is equally impressive as it features wins over Canandaigua (N.Y.), Corning (N.Y.), and Penfield (N.Y.). The Victor lineup is dominated by sophomores. Sophomore attackman Ryan Maloney leads the team with 41 goals and 26 assists. Senior Justin Kesselring leads the Red Raiders with 32 goals and 16 assists. This will be the only meeting between the two teams this season as Fairport plays in Class A and Victor is a Class B school.
Northeast Region Top 10
1. Darien (Conn.) 12-0
The Blue Wave capped a 3-0 week with a 10-4 win over FCIAC rival Greenwich (Conn.). Darien also defeated Trumbull (Conn.) and Yorktown (N.Y.) last week. Senior John Reed and sophomore Colin Minicus each finished with three goals in the Greenwich win. Darien faces a difficult slate this week with games again Norwalk (Conn.), St. Anthony's (N.Y.), and Ridgefield (Conn.).
2. Niskayuna (N.Y.), 13-1
The Silver Warriors have won nine straight since dropping a 7-6 decision to top-ranked Darien (Conn.). Last week, Niskayuna topped Saratoga Springs (N.Y.) and Ballston Spa (N.Y.). Michael D'Amario totaled 13 goals and seven assists and Ryan Lawson added seven goals in the two wins. Niskayuna closes out its regular season with games against Shenendehowa (N.Y.) and Burnt Hills (N.Y.) this week.
3. Smithtown West (N.Y.), 14-1
Smithtown West secured convincing wins over Northport (N.Y.) and Sachem East (N.Y.) last week. Ryan Keenan tallied five goals and six assists in the two wins. West closes out its regular season with a matchup at Bay Shore (N.Y.) on Tuesday.
4. Greenwich (Conn.), 11-2
Greenwich went 1-1 last week, defeating Bronxville (N.Y.), 7-4, and falling 10-4 to top-ranked Darien (Conn.). Tommy Rogan stopped 18 shots and Jamie Paradise and Bobby Goggin each scored twice in the Bronxville win. The Cardinals face Brien McMahon-Norwalk (Conn.) and Trinity Catholic (Conn.) this week.
5. Ridgefield (Conn.), 10-2
The Tigers bounced back from a 9-2 loss to New Jersey powerhouse Summit last Monday with a wins over Westhill (Conn.), 17-1, and John Jay-Cross River (N.Y.), 10-2. Simon Mathias scored a game-high four goals as the Tigers limited the Indians to three shots on goal. The Tigers face a difficult slate of games this week with match-ups against Trumbull (Conn.), Brien McMahon-Norwalk (Conn.), and Darien (Conn.).
6. St. Anthony's (N.Y.), 12-3
Since dropping their first two games of the season to Loyola-Blakefield (Md.) and Immaculata (N.J.), the Friars have won 12 of 13 games. The only loss during that stretch was an overtime loss to Chaminade (N.Y.). Last week, St. Anthony's avenged that loss with an 8-7 victory over the Flyers. The Friars also topped Yorktown (N.Y.), 12-7. Greg Galligan scored three goals in the Yorktown win. The Friars close out the regular season with a matchup against top-ranked Darien (Conn.).
7. Garden City (N.Y.), 13-2
The Trojans have now won six straight after falling 7-5 against Ridgefield (Conn.). Garden City posted a 12-3 win over Jericho (N.Y.) and a 9-4 win over Carey (N.Y.). James Sullivan had an impressive day against Carey. He won 16 of 17 faceoffs and also had two goals and one assist for the Trojans. Garden City closes out its regular season on Monday against Floral Park (N.Y.).
8. Pittsford (N.Y.) 12-1
The Panthers went 1-1 last week as the top of Section V (Rochester area) is showing its depth and talent. Penfield (N.Y.), which is 12-2, secured a 7-4 win over the Panthers. Pittsford followed that with a 12-11 overtime win over Victor (N.Y.). Victor is also 12-2. Sophomore Jon Perotto scored off a feed from senior Stephen Quinzi with 2:14 left in overtime to lift the Panthers over Victor. Quinzi, who is headed to Georgetown, finished with four goals and one assist for Pittsford, which led by three goals with six minutes left in regulation. The Panthers close the regular season with difficult contests against Penfield (N.Y.), Canandaigua (N.Y.), and Hilton (N.Y.).
9. Massapequa (N.Y.), 13-2
Since dropping back-to-back games in late March to Chaminade (N.Y.) and Garden City (N.Y.), the Chiefs have won 11 straight. That includes a 13-3 win over Calhoun (N.Y.) and a 16-1 win over MacArthur (N.Y.) last week. Jim Byrns had six goals and three assists and Craig Berge added two goals and eight assists in the two wins. Massapequa closes the regular season this week against Calhoun.
10. Chaminade (N.Y.), 10-3
After dropping two straight, including one last week to St. Anthony's, the Flyers rebounded with a 12-11 win over Fairfield Prep (Conn.). Sean Cerrone scored three straight goals to give the Flyers a 3-0 lead in the St. Anthony's loss. Against Fairfield Prep, Sam Bonafede finished with four goals. He netted the winner with 3:24 left in regulation. Thomas O'Connell scored with 3:31 left to tie the game at 10-10.
Sachem North (N.Y.) is making a strong case for inclusion in the regional rankings. At 12-3, the Flaming Arrows have won nine straight. Sachem North's three losses this season are to Archbishop Spalding (Md.), Smithtown West (N.Y.), and Half Hollow Hills East (N.Y.). North's resume includes wins over Smithtown East (N.Y.), Bronxville (N.Y.), Ward Melville (N.Y.), and Half Hollow Hills West (N.Y.). Last week, the Flaming Arrows knocked of Connetquot (N.Y.) and Riverhead (N.Y.). North closes out the regular season at West Islip (N.Y.) this week.
