A New York State Police investigator and assistant boys' lacrosse coach at Rocky Point was arrested by FBI agents Thursday on child pornography charges, according to media reports.

SeanMichael Pagano, 37, was arraigned in federal court Thursday. Pagano's lawyer says his client is not guilty. Newsday first reported the story.

Agents observed Pagano downloading several videos involving young girls engaged in sexual acts from a website that distributed child pornography, according to court documents. Pagano claims he was sent the videos in his capacity as a state investigator and intended to report them.

Police told the FBI that Pagano "was not authorized to conduct child pornography investigations," the complaint says.

Rocky Point school district told Newsday that Pagano has been relieved of his duties as assistant coach. He also reportedly has been suspended without pay at his state job.

If convicted, Pagano, who previously coached the MCLA (college club) team at Briarcliffe (2009-13), could face up to 10 years in prison. Pagano also had stints coaching at St. Mary's (N.Y.) High, Pace University and Farmingdale State. He played at Fairleigh Dickinson.

Prior to joining the state police, Pagano served in the U.S. Marine Corps in security and anti-terrorism forces. LaxMagazine.com's Jac Coyne profiled Pagano as part of a story on the reshaping of Briarcliffe lacrosse in January 2012.
