Big Shots: Connor English, Manhasset (N.Y.)

by Jeff Seidel | Special to Lacrosse Magazine Online

Virginia-bound Connor English scored five goals to lead Manhasset over Chaminade last week in the burgeoning public-private school rivalry.

WHO HE IS: Connor English is a senior attackman for Manhasset (N.Y.). He’s already committed to play for Virginia next year after a stellar four-year career with the Indians. He’s already posted 54 goals and 17 assists plus 46 ground balls this season. English leads the team in scoring and was picked as an Under Armour All-American this season after earning numerous awards his first three years. He’s totaled 162 goals and 64 assists in his career, some of the school’s top numbers.

WHAT HE DID: English came up with a big game to help Manhasset score a 9-7 victory over Chaminade last week. He scored five goals to help the Indians pull out an emotional victory that should be a big positive heading into the playoffs. English is the team’s leading scorer, and Manhasset will need that offensive punch to make noise in the playoffs.

WHY WE NOTICED: This was a big win for Manhasset, as the public school is just about 10-15 minutes from Chaminade in New York – and the two are quickly becoming big rivals. It also helped the Indians have a 15-1 record through play this past weekend. Even better for English and Manhasset is the fact that Chaminade beat the Indians easily last season.

WHAT HE SAID: “They’re one of the best teams we will face all season. It’s going to be a big confidence booster for us for the playoffs. They’re becoming a real big rival for us. [In the playoffs], this year, our whole team is aiming for a state championship. By playing a team game, we can go really far. The biggest thing that’s helped me this year is patience and working on the off-hand in the offseason.  I feel like it makes [defenders] play me more straight up now.”

WHAT’S NEXT:
Manhasset will have a Class C playoff game on Wednesday at Hofstra against an opponent to be determined. This is going to be a second-round playoff game.
