Generation Next Proves the Next Generation is Heading in Right Direction

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Generation Next girls' under-15 head coach Darren Payne might be a rookie at the US Lacrosse West Championships, but his Orange County based team isn't and they didn't play like rookies, either. Despite only forming six weeks ago with only 10 practices under their belt, Generation Next came out to the field focused and ready to play, with a 15-1 win over El Dorado Lightspeed Blue in the first round of pool play.
"I think the main factor in our win today was our intensity with our ride," Payne said. "We did a good job of riding the whole field causing a lot of turnovers creating a lot of extra possessions."
That's the way that Payne prefers his players to execute: controlled but high intensity, especially on defense.
"We like to apply pressure all over the field when appropriate. There are going to be some teams where we can't and if that's the case we will stick back there and played some solid defense. We have good athletes and they like to chase the ball, so we let them do it."
Not only is his team off to a good start in the record books, but he also has a right attitude about participating in events such as the US Lacrosse regional championships. His team will strive to get better as players and as a team everyday and playing in tournaments equals a chance to test their skills against other teams.
"Our expectation [with this event] is to play hard and get better. If we play well and can make it to nationals, great. If we don't, that's the way it is. We try to keep it realistic, because there are a lot of teams that have been playing together a long time and we haven't, so we will see how we do. If we compete we should do okay."
Midfielder Michaela Mahoney led all scorers with three goals and the defense (and the ride in the midfield) led an impressive stop allowing only one goal.
Payne and the Generation Next U15 girls' team start off with a win on the score sheet and a win with a positive, teach-first philosophy.
