Utah Lacrosse Convention on Tap
from press release
A coach can focus on the narrow metric of wins and losses, but
mentorship is another measure to gauge success.
Jim Wilson, a renowned New England prep school lacrosse coach with
401 career wins, will speak this Saturday at the Utah Lacrosse
Association (ULA) annual coaches convention. He will also see one
of his former players, Michael O’Malley of Park City, UT,
inducted into the state chapter’s Hall of Fame.
More than 100 attendees are expected at the conference, which takes
place Saturday, Dec. 5th, at Westminster College in Salt Lake City.
Wilson will share his philosophy of coaching developed in 49 years
at Loomis Chaffee in Windsor, CT. Other speakers include Wendy
Kridel, three-time world championship coach of the US Women’s
U-19 team, and Bruce Kracke of Positive Coaching Alliance
(www.positivecoach.org).
The day-long event will start with a Hall of Fame ceremony to
induct O’Malley, who played for Wilson in the 1970s.
O’Malley has officiated 1,200 lacrosse games in 20 years, and
served as the ULA’s president during four years of
unprecedented growth. He also helped to start and currently directs
the ULA’s nationally-regarded youth lacrosse tournament, the
Park City Ski Town Shoot Out.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by the Association, and
it’s a personal treat to have Coach Wilson on hand to see it.
He was an early, positive influence. But I’m only one of many
Loomis Chaffee graduates he has mentored who’ve gone on to
help grow the game across the country as coaches, officials, and
volunteers,” O’Malley said.
Both Kridel and Wilson are hall of famers, with Kridel inducted
into the Greater Baltimore Chapter of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame in
2003 and Wilson a member of the New England Chapter’s hall
since 2006.
