Blue Jays "Stick it to Sarcoma" Play Day, Johns Hopkins
in Baltimore, 9 a.m.
Rachel Ballatori, a 2012 Johns Hopkins graduate and two-time captain of the women's lacrosse team, created the "Stick it to Sarcoma" fall play day in 2011 in honor of her father, Ned Ballatori, who was then fighting cardiac angiosarcoma, an extremely rare and rapidly malignant soft-tissue cancer. He died on Dec. 25 of last year after a yearlong battle.
Last year's tournament raised more than $15,000 for the Hopkins Sarcoma Program and this year Ballatori has sought to raise at least $20,000 for the program again to fund research projects.
Saturday's play day will feature raffles, a silent auction, including Baltimore Ravens and Orioles packages, among other items, and there will be more opportunities to donate to the cause. All proceeds will benefit the Hopkins Sarcoma Program.
Teams participating: UMBC, Mount St. Mary's, George Mason and Johns Hopkins.
Georgetown Tournament, 9 a.m.
Georgetown hosts Temple, Lehigh, Delaware and Virginia Tech.
Duke Invitational, 9 a.m.
The Blue Devils host Notre Dame, High Point, Richmond, Winthrop, American, Davidson, North Carolina, Old Dominion and Coastal Carolina and a Florida split-squad.
The lucky ones are already there. The annual Hawaii Invitational men's and women's club tournament starts Friday and runs through Sunday at Kapiolani Park on the island of Oahu. The event, run by US Lacrosse's Hawaii Chapter, has three men's divisions (18 and over, 33 and over and 44 and over) and one open women's division (18 and over).
It's one of the marquee club events of the year and always is held on or around Halloween.
