Top Seeds Advance in US Lacrosse WCLA Division II Quarterfinals

Mary Morgan Bitler scored four second-half goals to help North Carolina Club rally past SMU 13-10 in the US Lacrosse WCLA Division II quarterfinals.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The top four seeds all advanced to the semifinal round as the 2012 US Lacrosse Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates National Championships, presented by Harrow Sports, got underway on Thursday at the El Pomar Sports Park.
Beth Ann Jancuska, named the Amtahcha Award winner as the top player in US Lacrosse WCLA Division II on Wednesday night, opened the championships with a big game to lead top-seeded Towson Club past Stanford Club 24-9. Jancuska had 11 points on seven goals and four assists and teammate Lindsay Kibler added five goals and three assists. Katherine Wendell led Stanford with three goals.
Towson, last year’s national-runner up, moves on to face fourth-seeded Westminster in a rematch of a semifinal from last year. Towson won that game 20-9.
Shauntel Hyde scored six goals to lead Westminster over Oakland 24-18 in a high-scoring affair. Oakland’s Desiree Messina scored with 11:13 in the game to cut Westminster’s lead to 16-15, but Westminster came back with two straight goals and Oakland never got closer than two. Chelsea Farrell added five goals and two assists for Westminster and Maggie HerrNeckar had four goals and two assists. Brianna Johnson had a huge day for Oakland, scoring 10 goals.
The other semifinal will pit North Carolina Club against Rhode Island.
Second-seeded North Carolina Club trailed Southern Methodist 8-4 at halftime, but then dominated the second half to earn a 13-10 victory. With the score tied 10-10, Mary Morgan Bitler scored with 7:17 to go to put the Tar Heels up for good. Bitler finished with four goals, all of them in the second half. Sarah Kennedy added three goals and three assists for the Heels. Mary Patterson and Margaret Patterson each had three goals for SMU.
Third-seeded Rhode Island scored the first three goals of the second half to break open a tight game and defeated Utah 19-12. Michelle Babat and Laura Klotz each had five goals and an assist for the Rams while Jen Lewis added four goals and two assists. Traci Shurtleff led Utah with five goals and the Utes also got 16 saves from goalie Cathryn Bonitz.
