COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Clayton Crum of the University of Texas and Beth Ann Jancuska of Towson University were named the inaugural winners of the Amtahcha Awards as the Player of the Year in their respective divisions of the US Lacrosse Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA).
The Amtahcha Awards were established by a gift from Dr. Larry
Feldman, founder of LaxPower.com, to the US Lacrosse Foundation to
honor the national players of the year in the US Lacrosse WCLA and
the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA). The MCLA
honorees will be named at its championships later this month in
Greenville, S.C.
Crum, a senior midfielder, earned the honor after scoring 98
goals, recording 21 assists, scooping up 41 ground balls, grabbing
63 draw controls and causing 38 turnovers. A three-time
All-American, she led the Longhorns to the Texas Women’s
Lacrosse League championship and a No. 7 seed for this year’s
national championship. She scored four goals in Texas’ 14-9
loss to UC Davis in the opening round of the championship to go
over 100 goals for the season.
Jancuska, a senior midfielder, led Towson’s club team to an
undefeated season and the No. 1 seed in this week’s US
Lacrosse WCLA Division II National Championship. Jancuska, who had
38 goals and 18 assists during the regular season, was named the
Outstanding Midfielder at last year’s event when Towson lost
to Chapman in the national championship game. The Tigers open play
in the tournament on Thursday against Stanford Club.
In Division I, six other individuals were selected for major
awards. Santa Clara University teammates Maria Pestana and Maggie
Burke were named the Attack Player of the Year and Midfield Player
of the Year, respectively. University of Georgia teammates Michele
Manis and Emily Seidel were named Defense Player of the Year and
Goalie of the Year, respectively. Christina Monahan of University
of Florida club team was named Rookie of the Year. Brandie Leach,
of the University of Texas, was named the Coach of the Year.
Two other members of the Towson program earned major awards in
Division II. Muireann Phelan was named the Goalie of the Year and
Cristen Sanfilippo was named the Coach of the Year. Chelsea Farrell
(Westminster College) was named Attack Player of the Year, Desiree
Messina (Oakland University) was named Midfield Player of the Year,
Jackie Gamper (Southern Methodist University) was named Defense
Player of the Year and Margaret Patterson (Southern Methodist
University) was named Rookie of the Year.
The Division I and Division II All-America teams were also
honored at the ceremony. The University of California, Los Angeles
