SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.
– Colorado State knocked off defending national champion
Virginia Tech Club 14-7 and Colorado rallied for a 9-8 overtime
victory against Georgia to highlight the opening day of the 2010 US
Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates (WDIA)
National Championship, presented by Harrow Sports.
Other opening day winners were Santa Clara, Lindenwood, UC Santa
Barbara, UC Davis, Cal Poly and Brigham Young.
CSU, the No. 11 seed, took care of the sixth-seeded Hokies for
the second time this season. The Rams won a 14-6 decision over the
Hokies in the regular season. Leading the way was junior goalie
Annette Greenberg. Greenberg made nine first half saves while
allowing just one goal to stake the Rams to a 4-1 halftime lead.
Greenberg finished the game with 11 saves.
"Throughout the season she's grown as a player and definitely
has developed into our starting goalie," said CSU coach Kelli
Prime. "We went back and forth with goalies and coming into this
competition we named her the starter because she definitely had
improved tremendously. She's always a fighter. I'm really impressed
with how well she did and I'm really proud of her."
After Virginia Tech cut the lead to 6-3 on a goal by Kristin
Campbell with 20:36 to play, the Rams went on a 4-0 run to put the
game out of reach.
Jacki Cella led the Rams with four goals, including three in the
second half and Brenna Mefford added two. Briana Warner led the
Hokies with three goals.
Wrapping up the night was a dramatic come-from-behind overtime
win for No. 9 seed Colorado over No. 8 Georgia. The Bulldogs took
an 8-5 lead on Lindsey Gipson's fourth goal of the game with 19:18
remaining in the second half, but that would be the last Georgia
goal.
Colorado dominated possession in the second half, but had
difficulty solving Georgia goalie Emily Seidel. Seidel made 15
saves, including several great stops down the stretch. Georgia was
unable to take advantage of Seidel's play as it struggled to clear
the ball.
"Our attack and the riding was unbelievable," said Colorado
coach Dan Finck. "It just showed how much the girls wanted it. They
caused so many turnovers."
Colorado finally came back to tie it 8-8 on a goal by Kara
Golmont with 5:11 left in regulation. After a scoreless first
overtime period, the Buffaloes scored the game winner with 24
seconds left in the second OT period. Amber Lister had a shot saved
by Seidel, but she picked up her own rebound and scored the winning
goal.
Lister led CU with two goals and two assists while Jody
Weisenhorn, Rebecca Greene and Golmont also had two goals. Bethany
Kotun had two goals to aid Gipson for Georgia.
In other first round games:
No. 1 seed Santa Clara fell behind West Chester 2-0 early, but
then scored the final seven goals of the first half and went on to
win 13-7. Krista Shaw had five goals and Scottsdale native Mayan
Zeitlin added three. Gracie Binder had a goal and four assists.
Amelia Reed and Cara Ripoli each had two goals for West Chester
while goalie Allison Livelsberger made 13 saves.
No. 2 seed Lindenwood found itself tied with No. 15 seed
Minnesota 5-5 at the half, but finally broke through in the second
half to win 13-10. Lacey Vatland led the Lions with four goals.
Karen Heggernes led the Gophers with six goals.
No. 3 seed UCSB had no trouble in cruising past Oregon Club
18-4. Ashley Antoon-Algieri led the Gauchos with four goals and
Alyssa Nelsen and Maggie Aker added three each. Briana Wright led
Oregon with two goals.
No. 4 seed UC Davis Club was playing in its first WDIA
championship, but it didn't show. The Aggies stormed past Boston
College Club 20-8. Jacklyn Taylor led the offensive onslaught with
five goals and Laura Maffucci added four, including three of the
first four for the Aggies. Catherine Crowe, Shannon Jergens and
Ashley Thibodeau all had two goals for BC.
No. 5 seed Cal Poly, a seven-time WDIA champion, led Texas 6-1
late in the first half, but had to battle before beating the
Longhorns 9-6. Texas scored back-to-back goals within 33 seconds to
cut Cal Poly's lead to 8-6 with 6:21 remaining before Amanda Nespor
iced the game for Cal Poly on a goal with 3:45 left. Bonnie Burtis,
Sarina Madnick and Hayley Saxton all had two goals for Cal Poly.
Texas goalie Jordan Cook made 14 saves and Clayton Crum had a pair
of goals.
No. 7 seed Brigham Young pulled away from Florida Club down the
stretch for a 13-9 victory. The game was tied 6-6 at the half and
was tied 9-9 with 12:30 to play, but BYU scored the final four
goals of the game. Emily Wright led the Cougars with four goals.
