When the NCAA Division III women's lacrosse bracket was released on Sunday, it offered one guarentee: fans won’t be seeing the same Final Four for the third straight year when the semifinals go down at Gettysburg on May 24.

Trinity and Middlebury, which have played on the final weekend in each of the past two seasons, are grouped same quadrant of the the bracket. So are Gettysburg and Fredonia and last season’s almost-Cinderella RPI. So you can consider that pod Division III’s version of the Group of Death.

Cortland and Salisbury will both be favored to return to Final Fours as the top seeds in each of their quadrants. TCNJ is favored to host the quarterfinals and emerge in the fourth region.

Four of the five Pool B bids went to teams from two conferences: the Landmark (Catholic and Susquehanna) and the SCIAC (Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer, who will meet for the fourth time this season in their opening game.) Mount Union makes its tournament debut as the other Pool B team.

The NESCAC ended up with five total bids. In addition to Trinity’s AQ, the conference sends Amherst, Colby, Middlebury and Williams as Pool C teams. York and Franklin & Marshall each grabbed Pool C bids, as was expected, and the SUNYAC received two bids, to Geneseo and Fredonia, completing the at-large pool.

To accommodate the four extra teams this season, the NCAA will play four first-round games at campus sites on Wednesday.
