Gettysburg Breezes Past Cabrini, 19-6

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Katie Blumenthal (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) poured in a career-high six goals to lead sixth-ranked Gettysburg College past Cabrini College 19-6 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championships Saturday afternoon at Clark Field.
Gettysburg (17-2) will host the regional round set for May 17-18. The Bullets will face Middlebury College (12-5), which defeated Endicott College 19-7, in the next round on Saturday, while Trinity (Conn.) College (16-2) will face the winner between Fredonia State University (11-6) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (13-4) in the other game. Official game times will be released on Monday, May 12.
After putting up five goals and two assists against Cabrini (14-6) in the first round of the national playoffs in 2012, Blumenthal once again lit up the Cavaliers on Saturday. She scored five consecutive goals for the Bullets over a nine-minute span to push the advantage to 6-1 at 15:04.
Melissa Scanzano tallied her second goal to pull the score to 7-2 at 11:42, but the hosts reeled off the next five tallies. Junior Bridget Kenny (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) found classmate Mandy Buell (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) for a goal at 5:48 and two minutes later Buell scored unassisted to push the lead to 10 (12-2).
Holding a 13-4 advantage at the half, Gettysburg surged ahead with five more scores to start the final period. Blumenthal posted her sixth and final goal off a feed from Kenny at 27:37 and senior Kelsey Markiewicz (Taconic, Conn./Berkshire School (Mass.)) picked up two goals during the run as the Bullets held an 18-4 lead with 20 minutes remaining.
Gettysburg turned in one of its best shooting percentages of the season, missing just nine times on 28 shots (.679). The Bullets held a slight edge in ground balls (17-16) as well as an 18-10 advantage in draw controls.
Markiewicz posted four goals and five draw controls, while Buell tallied two goals and two assists for Gettysburg. Sophomore Samantha Aiello (Sparks, Md./Maryvale Prep) picked up a pair of tallies and Kenny added one goal, two assists and four draw controls. Sophomore Maggie Connolly (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) dished out four assists and seniorBailey Beardsley (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa./Francis Scott Key (Md.)) turned in a pair of goals.
Freshman Shannon Keeler (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) played the first 30 minutes in goal and posted six saves while allowing just four goals. Keeler also picked up three ground balls, while sophomore Emily Tropsa (Darien, Conn./Darien) corralled two ground balls, two draw controls, and a caused turnover.
Scanzano and Sasha Wozniak each scored a pair of goals for Cabrini. Janel Folkomer posted four saves and Bree Thompson tallied three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
