Adrian Outshoots Augustana In 22-14 Victory

An eight-goal, three-assist performance by junior Hilary Kargl(Sacred Heart Academy, Louisville, Ky.) propelled the Augustana women's lacrosse team over Adrian by a score of 22-14 on Saturday, May 10th at Thorson-Lucken Field in the second-round of the NCAA Division III tournament. The Vikings are now just one of two unbeaten teams in the nation, climbing to 19-0. The Bulldogs ended their season with a 12-6 overall record.
Head coach Sara Tisdale's crew scored first but it was not until the 19:16 mark of the first half that the Vikings led for good. The Bulldogs fired right back to even the contest at 1-1 and then took the lead less than two minutes later. Kargl tallied her second and third scores of the game to put Augustana back on top 3-2 with 22:38 to go in the half but Adrian retaliated and reclaimed the lead just over a minute later.Kaylee Nolan (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) found the net for the equalizer with 20:16 left in the half and Kargl struck a minute later for an advantage the Vikings would not relinquish.
The two sides traded goals the next eight scores giving Augustana a 9-8 lead with 11:57 until intermission. Augustana strung together three goals for a 12-8 advantage before Adrian found the back of the net with 5:09 on the clock to pull within three. Kargl closed out the first-half scoring with her fifth goal of the afternoon at the 4:16 mark for a 13-9 blue and gold lead.
At the break, Tisdale's unit held a 16-14 shot advantage and controlled 13-23 draws. Augustana also gathered 13 first-half ground balls to just four by the visitors.
Augustana came out firing in the second half and took a demanding 17-9 lead after the first six minutes of play. The Bulldogs tallied three of the next five goals to make the score 19-12 with 13:25 until the final buzzer. Annie Hopkins (Mother Mcauley HS, Chicago, Ill.) pushed the host's lead to eight at the 10:15 mark. Goals by Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) and Shelby Cosman (Marian Catholic HS, St. John, Ind.) instilled the running clock with 4:30 remaining however Adrian scored the final two goals of the game at 2:26 and 1:56 resulting in a non-stop clock for just over two minutes.
Kargl led all scorers with eight goals while Nolan had four. Kendall Maduro (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) added three tallies while Handrahan, Kelly Stelzer (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.), and Hopkins each had a pair of goals. Cosman rounded out the Augustana scoring with one goal.
Handrahan had a game-high four assists with Kargl and Stelzer each adding three. Maduro had a pair of assists while Hopkins, Nolan, and Olivia Mayer(Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) all recorded one.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Hofmann (Columbine HS, Littleton, Colo.) registered seven saves on the day while Adrian had just three stops.
The Vikings allowed the Bulldogs to successfully clear 15-22 attempts while converting on 18-21 of their own. Adrian was only able to capitalize on 3-7 free-position shots as Augustana was 1-1 with Stelzer converting on the attempt. Ground balls were dominated by the Vikings as the hosts picked up 25 of the contest's 35 loose balls. Bridget Conniff (Benet Academy, Downers Grove, Ill.) caused a game-high four turnovers as the Vikings forced 18 on the afternoon. Nolan took control of seven draws for the hosts and Mayer recorded four of her own as the Vikings finished with 19 draw controls.
With the win, Augustana advances to the round of 16 in the NCAA Division III women's lacrosse tournament. Tisdale's team will face Salisbury. The Salisbury Sea Gulls are the defending national champions and currently hold a 19-1 record.
The round of 16 game will take place on Saturday, May 17th in Salisbury, Maryland.
