Hutchinson and Red Dragon D Bully Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cortland held Buffalo State scoreless for the game's final 35 minutes as the nationally fourth-ranked Red Dragons remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with an 8-3 win over the Bengals.

Sophomore Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) led Cortland (12-1, 5-0 SUNYAC) with three goals. Junior Taylor Robinson (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored twice and sophomore Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) added a goal and two assists. Senior Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) made 11 saves.

Becca Martinez scored twice and Sarah Kirchberger tallied a goal for Buffalo State (7-6, 2-3 SUNYAC). Colleen George made three saves and allowed five goals in the first half, while Adelena DiDuro recorded two saves and permitted three goals in the second half.

Buffalo State led 2-0 with 11 minutes elapsed on goals by Martinez and Kirchberger. Senior Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) broke Cortland's early scoring drought with a goal at the 17:48 mark, and Robinson scored twice to put the Red Dragons up 3-2 with 11:16 left in the half.

The Bengals tied the game on a Martinez goal with 5:02 remaining in the period but did not score the rest of the contest. Cortland took the lead on a goal by Hayes-Hurley with 2:03 left, and freshman Erica Geremia's (Camillus/West Genesee) goal with 20 seconds left gave the Red Dragons a 5-3 halftime lead.

The only goal in the first 28 minutes of the second half came with 17:17 remaining from the stick of Hayes-Hurley. Buffalo State, which outshot Cortland by a 24-17 margin, had numerous chances to stay in the game, but Hutchinson made eight of her saves in the second half and four other Buffalo State shots during the period hit the post. Cortland secured the victory with goals by Farrell with 1:57 left and by Hayes-Hurley with 22 seconds on the clock.

Cortland will travel to New Paltz for a SUNYAC game on Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m.
