York Tops MWC in CAC Semis; Salisbury up Next

YORK, Pa. - The No. 10 York College women's lacrosse team advances to the championship game of the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament after a big 12-5 victory over Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in the semifinal round of playoffs at Kinsley Field.

The Spartans win extends their overall record to 13-3, while the Eagles finish their season at 11-7.

The Green and White started out the game strong, tallying the first four goals of the contest.Erica Mulford (Crownsville, Md./Seton Keough) got things started with a free position goal just 2:24 into the first half. Mulford's goal was her 41st of the season and her 100th of her career. Karlie Dougherty (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) added a second goal 2:11 seconds later off another free position shot. Sarah Castle (Annapolis, Md./Delaware County Christian) struck with her 24th goal of the season only 20 seconds after Dougherty's. The Spartans continued to click on offense, scoring another goal this time by Leah Schultz(Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough) off a pass from Lauren Kula (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) at 23:12.

The Eagles struck with their first goal of the game at 20:36 off of a shot from Jenna Petrucelli.

York wasted little time and answered back with another goal. Kim Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) rocketed in a shot to put the Spartans up 5-1 with just under 20 minutes left in the first half. The Spartans finished the half on a 4-1 run, taking a 9-2 heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Spartans were firing off shots, but could not find the back of the nets. Mary Washington was the first to get on the board after 9:14, with a strong shot from Keller Torrey.

Once again, the Spartans had a quick answer for the Eagles. Schultz tallied her third goal of the game at 19:09 off a crisp pass from Kasie White (Glen Burnie, Md./North County).

Mary Washington cut the Spartans lead to six with a goal from Ashlyn Dacey at the 16-minute mark.

Kula recorded her fourth point of the game with a goal at 10:38.

The Spartans struggled to finish at the same pace as in the first half. Thanks to a strong defensive unit and some big saves byAshley Smith (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson), the Spartans were able to keep control of the game.

The Eagles kept fighting and added a fifth goal with just over seven minutes remaining, but could not find a way to make a comeback.

Wayson put the final exclamation point on the win with the clock winding down. Wayson's unassisted goal came with just 43 seconds left on the board.

The Spartans were led on offense by Wayson as she finished the game with five points off of four goals and one assist. Kula had a solid game with two goals and two assists. Also adding to the Green and White offense was Shultz with a hat trick. White, Castle, Mulford and Dougherty each added a point as well.

In goal, Smith earned her 12th win of the season. She played all 60 minutes, allowing five goals and coming up with eight saves.

For the Eagles, five separate players recorded goals. Petrucelli and Emily Atkinson led the team in points, finishing the game with two each.

Kathryn Stiltz recorded the loss in the net for the Eagles. Stiltz played in the first 28:40, allowing 10 goals and making two saves. Taylor Paige entered the game late in the second half and helped keep the Spartans from finishing up on a scoring spree. Paige played 31:20, making five big saves and only allowing two goals.

The Spartans dominated the Eagles 15-4 on draw controls, as well as 28-15 in total shots.

York returns to action on Saturday for the CAC Championship game at Salisbury University against the Sea Gulls. Game time has not been set. Check back to the Spartans athletic website for more details.
