No. 10 York Dominates St. Mary's in CAC Opener

from press release

YORK, Pa. - The York College women's lacrosse team beat St. Mary's 14-5 in their first Capital Athletic Conference matchup of the season on Saturday afternoon in York.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the CAC. St. Mary's now stands at 3-6 overall and falls to 0-1 in the conference.

The Green and White wasted little time getting on the board. Just 26 seconds into the game,Kim Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) was fouled and finished on a free position shot for her 22nd goal of the season. A little over a minute later the Spartans struck again. This timeErica Mulford (Crownsville, Md./Seton Keough) rocketed a shot past the Seahawks goalkeeper. After winning their fourth draw control in only 2:09, York extended their lead to 3-0. Leah Schultz (Catonsville, Md./Seton Keough) controlled the draw control and passed it to Megan Stine (Stevensville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) who put a nice finish on her shot.

The Seahawks were able to gain control of the ball for the first time at 27:45. They took advantage of a fast break opportunity to get a quick shot off, but goalkeeper Ashley Smith(Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) came up with a big save. St. Mary's managed to come up with the ground ball off the save and converted it to a goal at 27:16.

York answered back less than a minutes later. Mulford was credited with her second goal of the game off a crisp finish on a free position shot. The Spartans went on 6-0 run and dominated all over the field for the majority of the half.

St. Mary's cut the Spartans lead to eight with a goal at 3:51, but Wayson tallied her fourth goal of the game a minute later to put the Spartans up 11-2 heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Spartans continued to dominate. Just like the beginning of the game, the Green and White were the first to open up scoring. Lauren Kula (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) earned her fifth goal of the season off a strong shot from close range. However, the Seahawks were not ready to back down right away. St. Mary's recorded their third goal at 24:45. Once again, Wayson was able to answer right back and tallied her final goal of the game at 22:48.

The Seahawks began to pick up pressure on the Spartans throughout the middle stretch of the second half. Thanks to some solid defensive positioning and some excellent saves from Smith, York was able to remain in control and add one more goal. St. Mary's finished the game with the final two goals, but it was much too late and the Spartans would beat a CAC foe handily.

Wayson lead the Spartans on offense with six points. She scored a season high five goals and added one assist. Sarah Castle(Annapolis, Md./Delaware County Christian) tallied three goals on three shots. Mulford recorded two goals, while Kula, Schultz, Stine and Jocelyn Hudson (York, Pa./York Central) each had one. On defense, Jessica Soroka (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake Senior) had a single-game high four ground balls.

Smith looked strong in net for the Spartans in the win. She played 50:09, allowing three goals and making eight saves. Tina Nicklas (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) played the remaining 9:51. Nicklas made six saves and allowed two goals.

The Seahawks were lead on offense by Claire McGagh who tallied two goals on four shots.

In goal, St. Mary's tried to stop the Spartans with three different goalkeepers. Starter, Michelle DiMenna, played 14:30. She allowed seven goals and made three saves. Kayla Dunn replaced DiMenna and played for 40:35. Dunn allowed seven goals and made five saves. Kelly Shuman played the final 4:55 for the Seahawks and did not face a shot.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday for a 4:00 pm contest against No. 15 Messiah in Grantham, Pa.
