Top Gun Abbott Paces Cortland to Shootout Win

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) scored six goals and handed out two assists to lead the nationally second-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 17-11 victory versus The College at Brockport Tuesday afternoon in SUNYAC action.

Senior Erin Kollar (East Islip) added three goals for the Red Dragons (8-1, 2-0 SUNYAC), junior Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) had two goals and two assists, freshman Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded two goals and one assist and junior Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) contributed one goal and three assists. JuniorLaura Edward (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point), sophomore Taylor Reh (Miller Place) and freshman Chelsea Martin (Ogdensburg/Ogdensburg Free Academy) each chipped in with one goal.

Junior Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) started in goal, making five saves and allowing nine goals in 49 minutes, 26 seconds. SophomoreCourtney Morgan (Locust Valley) played the final 10:34, stopping two shots and surrendering two goals. Abbott added seven ground balls and four draw controls, Kollar collected seven draws and sophomore Jessica Lavelle(Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) scooped up six ground balls.

Freshman Nina Tassone (Liverpool) led the Golden Eagles (5-2, 1-1) with three goals and two assists. Freshman Katie Sullivan (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored three times, junior Emily Zartman (Canandaigua) had two goals and one assist, senior Dayna Piraino (Syracuse/Henninger) talled twice and junior Kaila Maguire (Potsdam) netted one goal.

Freshman Hannah O'Connor (Syracuse/Westhill) started in the cage, playing 43:48 seconds and making two saves. O'Connor exited the game in the first half and later returned to replace junior Bree Galloway (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) in the second half. Galloway turned aside three shots in 16:12. Tassone and freshman Colleen Hathaway (Watertown/South Jefferson) paced Brockport with three ground balls each, and sophomore Alyssa Scordo (Watertown/South Jefferson) recorded a team-high four draws.

After Farrell and Sullivan traded goals in the opening eight minutes of the game, the Red Dragons ran off six straight goals from six different players to grab a 7-1 lead with 7:11 remaining in the first half. Tassone and Zartman netted back-to-back goals at 5:19 and 3:45 to pull the Golden Eagles to within 7-3, but Cortland closed the half with goals from Di Fato at 1:57 and Abbott at 39 seconds for a 9-3 lead at intermission.

Abbott opened the second half with three straight goals in less than a three-minute span to make it a 12-3 game. Piraino responded with back-to-back scores just over a minute apart to cut the lead to 12-5 with 23:52 remaining. Cortland earned its biggest lead of the game at 15-5 as Reh, Kollar and Farrell tallied goals. Brockport, however, continued to press the action and made a four-goal run that cut Cortland's lead to 15-9 with 11:42 on the clock. Abbott stopped the streak with her sixth of the game at 6:23 while Cortland was down a player, and the Golden Eagles ended the game with two of final three goals for the 17-11 final.
