from press release
MADISON, N.J. - It didn't take long for The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team to pick up its first win of the season as the second-ranked Lions rattled off 13 straight goals in the first half on their way to a 17-3 win at FDU-Florham on Saturday.
The win put TCNJ at 1-0 on the season, while the Devils are 1-1.
The Lions got off to a great start scoring on their initial possession of the season as sophomore Jen Garavente (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) scored 36 seconds into the game on an assist from senior Sara Keating (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair).
After FDU-Florham tied the game at a goal apiece, TCNJ exploded for 13 consecutive goals to take command of the game. During that run, seven different Lions scored with Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) and Trenna Hill (Syracuse, NY/Lafayette) each scoring three times and Garavente and Lauren Pigott (Jobstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) both netting a pair.
Those 13 goals accounted for the rest of the scoring in the opening 30 minutes as TCNJ led 14-1 at the half.
Things were tighter in the second half as the Lions had a slight 3-2 edge, with Notos, Hill, and Keating getting the goals for the Lions.
Notos and Hill each finished with four goals, while senior Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) scored once and dished out six assist becoming just the third player in program history to eclipse 300 points. She now has 303 points on 159 goals and a school-record 144 assists. Garavente chipped in with three goals.
Sophomore goalie Kelsey Zinck (Burke, VA / James W. Robinson) made her debut between the pipes for the Lions a successful one as she finished with five saves.
Pigott not only got on the scoresheet with two goals and two assists, but she also dominated on draw controls leading all players with nine.
The Lions play their second game of a season-opening four-game road trip on Tuesday, March 6 when they return to Madison, this time taking on Drew University in a 5 p.m. start.
