Markiewicz Leads Gettysburg Past Etown

from press release

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.
– Sophomore Kelsey Markiewicz (Salisbury, Conn./Berkshire School (Mass.)) put up a career-high 11 points to lead the top-ranked Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team to a 22-9 victory at No. 20 Elizabethtown College Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (2-0) knocked off its second consecutive nationally-ranked opponent to start the year as the Bullets used a nine-goal run in the second half to blow the game open. It was Gettysburg's 103rd-straight win over an opponent ranked outside of the national top 10.

Markiewicz produced one of the highest scoring games in school history, scoring seven times on just nine shots and dishing out four assists. She also tied her personal best with three ground balls and was one shy of her best total with seven draw controls. Her 11-point day was the highest scoring output by a Gettysburg player since Julika Blankenship '03 turned in 12 points against Ursinus College in 2003. Markiewicz's total tied the seventh-highest in school history and fell just three points shy of both the school record and the Centennial Conference record.

Junior Lindsey Robinson (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) posted five points on three goals and two assists, while sophomores Katie Blumenthal (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) and Loren Pruitt (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) each struck three times, the former adding one assist. Senior goalkeeper Maddie Coleman (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) tied a career high with a dozen saves in the win.

Markiewicz started the day with a free-position goal just over two minutes into the game, but Elizabethtown (1-2) answered with the next two goals. The deficit was short-lived as the Bullets went for the next five goals, including two by Markiewicz, to jump out to a 6-2 lead with 13:53 remaining in the opening period.

Each team tallied four goals before Pruitt's tally at 1:07 gave the visitors a 11-6 lead heading into the break.

The Blue Jays maintained the five-goal deficit until 15:23 when Markiewicz scored a man-down goal and kick-started a nine-goal run. Five Bullets got into the scoring column during the run with a final toss by Markiewicz setting the score at 22-8 with 42 seconds left.

Gettysburg held the edge in shots (39-24), ground balls (26-23), and draw controls (22-13).

Sophomore Kelly Spieker (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) added a career-best two goals, while junior Lindsay Menton (Ellicott City, Md./Glenelg Country School) posted one goal, one assist, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Junior Kat Nestor (Darien, Conn./Darien) caused three turnovers and junior Alex Casey (Jenkintown, Pa./Abington) posted five ground balls and three draw controls.

Madalyn Schnader, Leigh Flounlacker, and Emily Butler each posted two goals for Elizabethtown.

Gettysburg will head to the Sunshine State for a pair of games over spring break. The team will face Stevenson University on Monday, March 12, at 10 a.m. before taking on Stevens Institute of Technology two days later at the same time. The games will take place at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orland, Fla.
