W&L Women the Pick in ODAC

FOREST, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team was picked to repeat as conference champions in the ODAC Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released on Wednesday afternoon.
The Generals received seven first-place votes and totaled 79 points in the poll to out-distance Lynchburg College, who had 72 points and three first-place votes.
Roanoke and Virginia Wesleyan tied for third with 62 points, with VWC collecting the final first place vote. Randolph-Macon (45), Guilford (43), Bridgewater (35), Sweet Briar (22), Hollins (17) and Randolph (12) rounded out the poll.
The Generals, who are ranked 14th in the IWLCA Preseason Division III poll, finished the 2011 season with a 15-5 overall record and a perfect 9-0 mark in league play en route to claiming the league title. The Generals advanced to the NCAA Tournament before falling to Salisbury, 13-12, in the second round.
The Generals return two all-conference selections this spring in senior midfielder Christina Benedetti and sophomore defender Leanne Stone (Second Team), along with the 2011 ODAC Rookie of the Year, sophomore midfielder Alex Van Horn.
Benedetti recorded 39 draw controls, 24 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers en route to garnering First Team All-ODAC and Second Team All-Region accolades.
A Second Team All-ODAC honoree, Stone helped the league's second-best defense register an 8.46 goals-against average, as she notched 30 ground balls and 26 caused turnovers.
Van Horn led the ODAC with 109 draw controls, and added 23 goals, eight assists and 14 ground balls.
The Generals begin their season on February 19 when they travel to Christopher Newport for a 3:00 pm contest.
