Ramey Named Head Coach of Denison Women
from press release
Associate Director of Athletics, Physical Education and
Recreation Lynn Schweizer has announced the hiring of Kristin Ramey
as Denison's next head women's lacrosse coach and assistant
professor of physical education. Ramey becomes Denison's ninth head
coach of the women's lacrosse program. She succeeds interim head
coach P.J. Soteriades, who has handled the day to day operations of
the program since January.
"I am excited to begin my career as a head coach at a university
that has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in women's
lacrosse," said Ramey. "I felt at home the moment I set foot on
campus and I know that recruits will feel the same way when they
make their college visit to Granville."
"In my brief meeting with the team, the outstanding leadership that
exists was very apparent. I hope to help channel that leadership
into future successes at the conference and national level, and
make their four-years at Denison University as memorable as
possible."
Ramey comes to Denison after spending the last five years as an
assistant coach at Bridgewater College (Va.) and McDaniel College
(Md.). At Bridgewater, Ramey served as the assistant coach in
women's lacrosse and field hockey and was also an adjunct professor
in the department of exercise science since August of 2010.
Prior to her season at Bridgewater, Ramey spent four years as an
assistant coach at her alma mater, McDaniel. From 2006 through 2008
she was a graduate assistant coach with the Green Terror, and in
August of 2008, she became the full-time assistant coach for
lacrosse and field hockey. In addition to her coaching duties,
Ramey also served as the assistant fitness director and taught
physical activity classes in the exercise science department.
"We are happy to welcome Kristin Ramey to the Denison community,"
noted Schweizer. "Her experiences as an assistant coach combined
with her impressive resume as a player at McDaniel make her a great
fit to lead the Denison women's lacrosse program."
In 2008, Ramey earned her master's degree in exercise science from
McDaniel and in 2005 she received her bachelor of arts in exercise
with a minor in business administration from McDaniel.
As a player, Ramey was a four-year member of the McDaniel women's
lacrosse and field hockey teams. In 2005 she received the Women's
Athletic Alumnae Award as the school's most outstanding senior
athlete. A two-time first-team Centennial Conference selection,
Ramey led the team in goals (40), assists (13), points (53) and
caused turnovers (25).
As a senior, InsideLacrosse.com named her a third-team
All-American, and in 2004 she was selected as the team's most
valuable player. Ramey is ranked among the all-time leaders in
goals, assists, ground balls, draws and caused turnovers at
McDaniel.
Ramey spent one year as a lacrosse coach and teacher at Bedford
High School in Bedfordshire, U.K. She is the director of Crease
Ranch Lacrosse and Field Hockey Camp in Houston, Texas and was the
assistant coordinator of event and game operations for the 2010
NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship weekend in Baltimore, Md.
The Big Red are coming off one of their most successful seasons in
recent history as the team posted a 13-5 record and a perfect 6-0
record in North Coast Athletic Conference play en route to their
16th NCAC championship. Denison advanced to the NCAA Tournament for
the 14th time in program history before falling to No. 12 ranked
Messiah in the first round.
The season was highlighted by a 10-game winning streak that spanned
more than a month. Three members of the Big Red squad (Lulu Carter,
Carl Tschantz and Jenny Strathern) were named to the IWLCA
all-region squad and seven were named all-conference.
