Cortland Sophomore DiFato Reaches 100 Career Points in Win over New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Sophomore Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) scored five points on three goals and two assists to become the 32nd player in Cortland history to reach 100 career points as the fifth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team defeated New Paltz, 20-6, Saturday in SUNYAC action. Di Fato now has 101 points on 72 goals and 29 assists in her one-plus seasons.
Junior Erin Kollar (East Islip) also scored three goals for the Red Dragons (11-1, 4-0 SUNYAC) and added an assist. Junior Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) led all players with eight points on two goals and six assists. Sophomore Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) and freshman Ashley Cook (Commack) each recorded two goals and one assist, while junior Jordan Miller (Liverpool) and freshmen Liz Beville (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) and Taylor Reh (Miller Place) scored two goals apiece.
Sophomore Mary Hartzheim (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) contributed one goal and one assist and freshman Taylor Robinson (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored a goal. Sophomore goalies Ally Levy (Reisterstown, MD/Seton Keough) and Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) split time in the cage with Levy making two saves in the first half and Hutchinson stopping one shot in the second half.
Sophomore Juli Rehain (Suffern) and freshman Talia Tesler (Rochester/Brighton) led the Hawks (6-6, 0-4) with two goals apiece. Junior Julia Donato (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) added one goal and one assist, senior Bridgitte Hooker (Glens Falls) scored once and sophomores Brittany Hunt (Saugerties) and Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove/North Shore) chipped in with one assist each. Junior goalie Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville/Sachem East) registered six saves.
After Rehain opened the scoring one minute, 44 seconds into the game, the Red Dragons strung together four goals -- two from Di Fato and one each from Hartzheim and Kollar -- in less than a five-minute span to grab a 4-1 lead. Hooker pulled the Hawks to within 4-2 with a free-position goal at 20:39, but Cortland ended the half on an eight-goal run for a 12-2 lead at intermission. Miller and Kollar each scored twice during the streak and Di Fato recorded her 100th career point with an assist on a goal by Abbott at 13:46.
The Red Dragons extended the lead to 19-2 with the first seven goals of the second half from seven different players. The Hawks then put together three consecutive goals to make it a 19-5 game at the 11:47 mark before Campese and Donato traded goals in the final 10 minutes for the final of 20-6.
