SALEM, Va. – The No. 14 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team scored the first goal of the contest and never looked back as it went on to defeat Roanoke College, 17-10, on Thursday evening at Kerr Stadium.

Senior attacker Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) put the Generals (5-4, 2-0 ODAC) on the board first, scoring off a free position shot to give the Generals a 1-0 edge with 25:51 on the clock.

Roanoke (4-4, 1-1 ODAC) responded with a free position goal by Gina Valles to knot the score (1-1) at the 24:05 mark, but W&L went on to score six of the contests' next seven goals to assume a 7-2 lead with 6:13 remaining in the opening half. The Maroons found the net at the 5:34 mark, but the Generals were able to maintain a four-goal lead (7-3) at the break.

During the aforementioned run, the Generals received two goals apiece from first-year attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks) and junior attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), while Megargel and senior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) each chipped in one goal.

RC's Valles opened scoring in the second stanza, finding the net just 56 seconds in to pull the Maroons to within three goals (7-4). Klein extended the Generals lead to five goals (9-5) with consecutive free position goals at the 27:56 and 26:18 marks. However, Roanoke tallied three consecutive goals, including two from Valles, to get the Maroons back to within two goals, 9-7, with 19:21 remaining in the contest.

The Generals' offense took command of the game after that point, scoring five goals over the next 5:05 to assume a 14-7 lead with 14:16 left in the game. The scoring started with a goal by first-year midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) at the 18:15 mark, followed by two markers from Mathews and one apiece from junior attacker Alli Shearin (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) and Klein. Roanoke pulled no closer than six goals the rest of the way, as W&L claimed the 17-10 triumph.
