No. 8 Cortland Sneaks By No. 11 W&L

LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior Jordan Miller (Liverpool) broke a 7-7 tie with her second goal of the game at the four minute, 48 second mark of the second half to lead the nationally eighth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to an 8-7 win at 11th-ranked Washington & Lee Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field. The Red Dragons improved to 3-1 with the victory, and the Generals fell to 4-3.
Sophomore Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) also scored twice for the Red Dragons, while junior Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) recorded a goal and an assist. Freshmen Ashley Cook (Commack), Alexis Egeberg (Black River/Carthage) and Liz Beville (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) each tallied a goal, and sophomore Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) chipped in with an assist. Sophomore goalie Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) turned aside nine shots.
Wilton Megargel led the Generals with three goals. Margaret Klein and Meade Brewster netted two goals apiece, and Kate Donnelly, Emmy Mathews and Alli Shearin each contributed one assist. Goalie Katharine Farrar made six saves.
Washington & Lee jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game on a pair of goals from Megargel and one by Klein. Cortland answered with a string of four goals to grab a 4-3 lead with 1:16 left in the half. Abbott scored her team-high 12th goal at 17:50, and Egeberg followed with her first career goal at 11:27. Beville found the back of the net at 7:04 and Di Fato scored her first of the game at 1:16 from the free position. Megargel knotted the game up for the Generals just five seconds before intermission with a free-position goal.
Di Fato and Miller gave the Red Dragons a 6-4 lead with unassisted goals at 28:36 and 25:34, respectively. Klein cut the lead to one with her second of the game at 15:52 before Campese set up Cook's goal at 14:28 to make it 7-5 in favor of Cortland. Brewster then scored back-to-back goals at 12:08 and 8:01 to tie the game and set the stage for Miller's game winner that was assisted by Abbott as the Red Dragons held on for the victory.
