Fisher Upends No. 12 Dutchwomen

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team held on to earn a 14-13 win over nationally-ranked Union College on Saturday at Fisher's Growney Stadium.
With the win, Fisher moves to 2-1, while Union, ranked 12th in the latest national coaches poll, falls to 1-1.
Fisher never trailed in the game.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-1 lead midway through the first half, but the Dutchwomen chipped away and tied the game at 6-6 with 7:08 left in the opening period.
Fisher took an 8-6 lead at intermission after two free-positional goals. Bridget Alberts made it 7-6 with 3:09 left and Melissa Leonard scored her third goal of the half with 33 seconds left.
Union pulled to within one goal five different times in the second half, but was never able to tie the game.
Mary Stimson scored three goals in the second half to lead the Cardinals, while freshman Taylor Hughes scored the eventual game-winner with 5:02 left, ripping a shot into the upper right corner from 10 yards out.
Union scored with 23 seconds left and won the ensuing draw, but turned the ball over just 10 seconds left and never regained possession.
Leonard led the Cardinals four goals. Courtney Clare totaled two goals and one assist, while Hughes scored twice.
Jackie Maynard finished with one goal and one assist, while Jill Zerrillo scored her first career goal.
Meg Merriam led Fisher with four draw controls and assisted on a goal.
Caroline Trpcevski and Molly Naylon each played 30 minutes in goal and stopped three shots.
