Centenary Breezes Past St. Elizabeth

SOMERSET, N.J. – Junior Meredith Bruce (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) began her collegiate career with a flourish, finishing with nine points on six goals and three assists to lead the Centenary women's lacrosse team (1-0) to a resounding 24-1 victory over the College of St. Elizabeth (0-1), Tuesday in Somerset, N.J., in the season opener for both teams.
Centenary took 37 shots and held the College of Saint Elizabeth to just six. The Cyclones forced 28 Eagles' turnovers and finished with 24 groundballs to CSE's nine.
Besides Bruce, eight other Cyclones finished with at least a point in the victory. Sophomore Allie Swartz (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) matched her career-high with three goals while also tallying four assists. Junior Danielle Bay (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) recorded five goals and sophomore Alysia Pinkerton (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) contributed four goals, one assist and a team-best four caused turnovers. Juniors Kellie Dugan (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) (two goals) and Chelsea Gummerson (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny) (one goal, one assist) each posted two points.
Sophomores Nicole Judd (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette Senior), Kellie Rose (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and Danielle Trucksess (Collingswood, N.J./Collingswood) each scored one goal apiece. Judd led the team in groundballs, with seven. Junior goalie Ako Nakabun (Tokyo, Japan/Koyamadai Metropolitan) got the start and recorded five saves to pick up the win.
The Lady Cyclones return to action on Saturday, March 12, with another road game, this time at St. Mary's (Md.) at 3:00 p.m.
