No. 5 Gettysburg Routs Mary Washington
from press release
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg stampeded out of the gate with 12 first-half goals and put up its biggest season-opening win since 2003 with a 17-6 victory over No. 16 University of Mary Washington in women's lacrosse action at Clark Field on Thursday night.
The fifth-ranked Bullets received career-high scoring efforts from sophomore Lindsey Robinson (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms), junior Hannah Church (Ellicott City, Md./Mount de Sales), and senior Marnie Commins (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) who each tallied five goals. Robinson also added four assists for a career-high nine points.
Gettysburg (1-0) needed only 1:32 to get on the board in the 2011 season as Robinson tossed in the first goal off a free-position attempt. Church added an unassisted score one minute later before Mary Washington's (2-2) Katie Wallis cut the lead to 2-1 at 26:09.
The Bullets blew the game open with 11 of the next 12 goals, taking a 13-2 lead on a goal by Commins with 24:42 left to play in the game. The offense came via the defense, as the hosts held the visitors to a season-low goal total by forcing 23 turnovers.
Gettysburg logged its biggest margin of victory in a season opener since a 15-4 win over Messiah College to start the 2003 campaign.
Senior Becky Lutz (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand), sophomore Hayward Sawers (Timonium, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls), and freshman Kelly Spieker (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) each notched two caused turnovers. Sawers also added a game-high five ground balls and an assist.
Senior Laura McIntyre (Glenmoore, Pa./Coatesville) and junior Maddie Coleman (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) each played a half in goal and combined for five saves for Gettysburg.
Gettysburg returns to the fold with another non-conference game at home against Elizabethtown College on Saturday, March 5, at 1 p.m.
